Kadavar are a rock band from Berlin, Germany. The band, who were founded in 2010, show attributes of both psychedelic rock and stoner rock in their music. They are considered retro rock due to their sound being described as similar to bands of the 70s hard rock/heavy metal era. Kadavar currently consists of three members.

History

In 2010, guitarist Philip Lippitz and drummer Christoph Bartelt started playing together. They became a band when Cristoph Lindemann joined as a bassist and lead vocalist. Lindemann, who is known more commonly as "lupus", decided to switch to guitar. This left Lippitz to switch to bass.[1]

In July 2012, the self-titled debut album was released consisting of 6 songs at a length of 33:52.[2] Due to Visa problems, a planned tour could not take place during a trip to the US - except for the appearance at the South by Southwest festival. To take advantage of the time, the band recorded various video clips of themselves in Texas and eventually this made the official music video for their single Come Back Life.[3]

In July 2013, bassist Philip Lippitz left the band. In the last live performances, he was replaced by Simon Bouteloup, who was officially announced as a new member of the band shortly after.[4] Bouteloup had previously played in the metal band The Oath before leaving at the end of 2012. Come Back Life was produced by drummer Christoph Bartelt.[5]

The second album Abra Kadavar was released in April 2013 and debuted at number 42 on the German charts.[6]

In early 2014, Kadavar started touring with fellow retro styled hard rock band Wolfmother.[7] In July 2014, Wolfmother jammed and recorded a few songs in Kadavar's studio.[8]

As of March 2015, The song Doomsday Machine hit 600,000 views on YouTube and was uploaded by Nuclear Blast's channel two years before. It is currently, Kadavar's most popular song according to views on social media. Black Sun is second with 380,000 views on YouTube.[9]

Style

From the beginning, Kadavar was an authentic realization of the ideas of doom, space rock and proto-metal. Kadavar's style is similar to bands such as Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath who were coincidentally some of their influences. The band use "hard panning" distribution of audio tracks (guitar on the left channel, bass on the right, drums on the inside right and vocals in the middle) to recreate accurate reproduction of the live performances of the group.[10] The band's main genres are psychedelic rock, stoner rock, hard rock and acid rock. In the second album Abra Kadavar, progressive rock is a genre that is also heard across the ten songs.
