"Kabhi Jo Baadal Barse" (English: When the clouds rain someday) is a romantic Hindi song from the 2013 Bollywood film, Jackpot. Composed by SharibToshi, the song is sung by Arijit Singh, with lyrics by Turaz and Azeem Shirazi. The music video of the track features actors Sunny Leone and Sachiin J Joshi.[1] A female version of the same song was released as part of the film soundtrack, which was rendered by Shreya Ghoshal.

Background

The song is composed by Sharib Sabri and Toshi Sabri.[2] In the composition, the duo infused piano notes and sound of rainfall with minimal music arrangements.[3] Lead actor of the film, Sachiin J Joshi assisted music director Sharib–Toshi in developing the track. Director of the film, Kaizad Gustad said; "[Joshi] has an amazing sense of rhythm and has contributed significantly to the music of the film".[4] The song appears four times in the soundtrack album of the film. The original version was sung by Arijit Singh while the female version was rendered by Shreya Ghoshal and it includes two remixes of the male version. British Asian music producer Rishi Rich re-mixed the song, fusing traditional Bollywood sounds with the vocals of Singh, along with the voice of British reggae vocalist Maxi Priest. Mixed by Rich, a higher tempo on a club mix version of the song was released as part of the soundtrack.[5]

The song was shot in Thailand and it was choreographed by Bosco-Caesar.[6] The music video which is set in a forest, is picturised on Sunny Leone and Joshi.[7] During the Miranda House fest in Delhi, Singh expressed his disapprobation with the actors in the music video, which was one of his "personal favorite" songs. Singh stated; "I only wish that Sunny Leone wasn't there in the video of this song. It's my personal say, I don't know about others".[8] Rationalising the issue, Leone considered it as a rumour and justified; "if [Singh] didn't want me to be featured in the song, or if he didn't know about it, why did he sing that song in Jackpot? He wouldn't have sold the song to the producers if he knew I was in it, to begin with".[9]

Release and response

The song was released digitally as part of the soundtrack of film on 1 November 2013.[10] The music video of the song was officially released on 4 November 2013, through the YouTube channel of T-Series.[11] Out of the four versions, the film incorporated the male version of the song which is sung by Arijit Singh. A lyrical music video of the female version, performed by Shreya Ghoshal, was released on 9 November 2013.[12]

Critical reception

The song along with its female version, received critical acclaim among the music critics.

Writing from Rediff.com, Joginder Tuteja calling the song "terrific", appraised the vocals by Arijit Singh, lyrics by Turaz and Azeem Shirazi, and the "beautiful romantic" composition by SharibToshi. Tutejer further stated; "The singer does tremendously well in this love song [...] It's so good that it's been repeated three more times in the album".[24] Rafat from Glamsham was enchanted with the composition of the song; "Arijit Singh base and almost inebriated vocals are a delight to savour and are the highlight of this lovely number".[3] Blog To Bollywood reviewers, categorising the track as "tranced Romantic/Soul rhythm track" found the "wonderfully created" lyrics and the "beautiful voice" of Singh very much appealing to listen.[25]

Rajiv Vijayakar of Bollywood Hungama, calling it "a killer of a song", described Singh's rendition in the song as "transparent soulfulness". He further mentioned; "The lyrics move from eulogy of the beloved to acceptance and later angst. The composition seems to have wandered in straight from a Mukesh Bhatt-Mahesh Bhatt film in its haunting intensity.[26] Nishevitha Vijayanand from MovieTalkies wrote; "Turaz and Azeem Shirazi's lyrics are awash with romance albeit tinged with melancholy. Add to that Arijit's spellbinding vocals, there is no doubt whatsoever that the composers have got a winner in their hands".[27]

Female version

Writing from Rediff.com, Joginder Tuteja stated that version is "good enough to firmly establish the placement of this song as one of the best in recent months".[24] Similar for the original, Rafat from Glamsham reacted positively to the version; "well rendered superbly by the sureeli Shreya Ghoshal and its always a treat listening to her".[3] Blog To Bollywood reviewers, though credited the track wrongly to Sunidhi Chauhan, found the song "beautifully sung and supported through music".[25]

Rajiv Vijayakar of Bollywood Hungama, calling the version "more accomplished" and "more placid in vocals and orchestration", felt that Ghoshal's "classical nuances and her artistry shines in the tiny inflections in her renditions [...] taking the song to another dimension".[26] Nishevitha Vijayanand from MovieTalkies wrote; "Shreya's rendition has a hint of classical music and is very pleasing. The mood is once again poignant and the use of minimalistic instrumentation highlights the pathos that is quite perceptible in this melody".[27]
