KXOR-FM (106.3 FM) is a radio station broadcasting in classic rock format. Licensed to Thibodaux, Louisiana, USA, the station is currently owned by Sunburst Media-Louisiana, LLC.[1]
The station serves the Houma/Thibodaux metropolitan area of Southeastern Louisiana
History
This station was started in 1966 by the Delta Broadcasting Company as KTIB-FM as a 3,000 watt sister station to KTIB AM.[2] The station was sold in 1973 to Joseph Costello III, owner at the time of WRNO-FM and later on WRNO worldwide who switched the callsign to KXOR and formatted the station in his years of ownership as a rock station and lastly as a country station branded as "LA Country 106" before being sold upon his death to Guaranty Broadcasting of Baton Rouge in 1997 who promptly flipped the format to classic rock branded as "Eagle 106.3" so as not to compete with sister station KCIL . The station was sold as part of a cluster of stations in 2006 to Sunburst Media-Louisiana LLC. who updated the playlist to include newer rock than previously heard transforming the station into a Mainstream rock format. In November 2009, the radio company brought in Los Angeles radio consultant and music producer "Mighty Mike Quinn" who took over as Vice President of Programming. Quinn upped the quality standards for the New Orleans/Houma Louisiana stations adding new out of market personnel. The station branding for KXOR was changed to "The Worldwide K-Rock" (that was also voice-imaged by Mighty Mike Quinn) with a newer, more Modern Rock playlist dropping most of the old 1980s rock that was part of their previous and played-out playlist. K-Rock quickly became a most popular radio station in Louisiana because of the overwhelming promotions coupled with modern witty and clever imaging. In the U.S. K-Rock FM 106.3 became popular on a national scale as Quinn's programming broke open new artists and bands first and on a scale that beat most all to the punch. At one point Mike Quinn could be heard on four different radio stations per day, having four full-time live air-shifts in the cluster that would carry his voice as a radio show host over most of the state of Louisiana. The significance is in Quinn's 7-day a week work schedule that included live remote radio broadcasts, on-air shifts, and then music producing at night and song writing. Some producing works included albums that were to be for New Orleans based music mogul Master P and No Limit Records. In late 2010 Mighty Mike Quinn's contract ended and he retreated with his fiancé (Model and Radio Host) Viny Star back to Santa Monica, Ca.
On March 1, 2011 KXOR-FM changed their format to classic rock, branded as "LA 106.3 Rock Hits Radio". A not well received move according locals and club owner and KXOR advertiser Mike Fesi... "it was a sad day when we lost K-Rock, we lost all support for national and local rock bands."
KXOR Golden Years, 1982-1987
KXOR in the 80s was one of the best stations in South Louisiana. Between its cutting edge, and somewhat uncontrollable, on air talent and music, KXOR was the heart beat of Thibodaux, a diverse college town. Its owner allowed for some creative direction with KXOR's talent as long as they followed a strict format when it came to the Music. Tom Upton and Jamie J made certain that the airwaves were filled with the latest and most popular rock and roll music that was available. XOR, as it was commonly referred to, always brought its 'A' game when it game to delivering witty and sometimes off the wall spin on the happenings of the day. Her talent ranged from music trivia experts, DP (top 40) and Joe Edwards (Beatles) to Mark Thomas' antics to Music Mike's calm, cool, hip, smooth, voice that woke you up in the morning. It was all held together by the coolest GM in the business, Greg Dumas, and of course the ladies in the office, Trish and Leslie. They seemed to get anything we needed when ever we needed it.
