KMC Music, Inc., doing business as KMC Musicorp,[1] is a wholly owned subsidiary of Fender Musical Instruments Corporation,[1] and an owner and distributor of several brands of musical instruments. Today, KMC Musicorp owns a number of subsidiaries and brands in the music industry, being the largest independent distributor of musical instruments and accessories in the United States and a major producer of guitars and guitar parts and accessories.
History
The company began as Kaman Music Corporation /kəˈmɑːn/, a part of the Kaman Corporation founded by Charles Kaman. In addition to his business interests in aviation, Kaman was a guitarist who came to explore the use of composite materials technologies to guitar building. He and his engineers created the round-backed, composite-body Ovation guitar which has revolutionized the guitar industry since about 1966.
On 29 October 2007 the Kaman Corporation announced that it had agreed to a definitive deal to sell its subsidiary, the Kaman Music Corporation, to Fender Musical Instruments Corporation (FMIC) for $117 million. On January 2, 2008 Kaman received approximately $120 million in cash from Fender Musical Instruments Corporation, which included the purchase price of $117 million and certain working capital and cash adjustments.
In 2011, KMC Music Inc. (Kaman Music Corporation) and Musicorp, sister companies under the FMIC umbrella, have united their sales and catalog divisions as KMC Musicorp.[2][3][4]
In 2014, Drum Workshop acquired the Gretsch Drums, TOCA, Latin Percussion, LP, KAT, Ovation guitar and Gibraltar brands.[5]
