KEWU-FM, also known as Jazz 89.5, is a non-commercial jazz outlet serving the Spokane, Washington area. The station, which is run by Eastern Washington University, went on the air on April 7, 1950 as KEWC, a 10 watt AM station, before moving to the FM Band in the late 1960s. Today KEWU broadcasts at 89.5 MHz with an effective radiated power of 10 kW.
KEWU was named the 2005 Best Small Market Jazz station by Jazz Week magazine and Program Director Elizabeth Farriss was named Best Small Market Jazz Programmer for 2005 and again for 2009.
KEWU offers over 150 hours of classic and contemporary jazz every week. That station has expandend its programing over the years to include Big Band, Latin Jazz. Other specialty programs broadcast on KEWU The Friday Night Blues, and Nightfall.
