KEOL (91.7 FM) is a radio station broadcasting from Eastern Oregon University (EOU) in La Grande, Oregon. KEOL currently operates at 91.7 MHz with an operating power of 310 watts.

History

KEOL first took the air in September 1973 as KEOC-FM. The station originally broadcast on a frequency of 91.1 MHz, with 10 watts of power from a Gates tube-fired transmitter.

KEOL was conceived in early 1967, when two employees of what was then known as Eastern Oregon College envisioned a campus FM radio station offering classical and jazz music -- genres not readily available on local radio at that time. A February 1967 letter between the two employees, proposing creation of such a station and applying to the Federal Communications Commission for the necessary licenses, may be found in KEOL's public files.

KEOL was first located in the newly completed Hoke College Center, before moving to the Walter M. Pierce Library in 1976. A second move later placed KEOL in its present location, a two-story bungalow just north of the Pierce Library complex.

Operations

KEOL La Grande is operated by the students and faculty of Eastern Oregon University. Staff include a faculty adviser, station manager, program and music directors and assistants. Also serving KEOL are sponsorship coordinators and work study students. Occasionally, a student will be tapped to serve as news director. EOU alumni and other volunteers act as community liaisons and advisers.

The station is funded by student incidental fees, fundraising activities and underwriting.[1]

KEOL broadcasts continuously from a modern studio which also has production equipment. The station boasts a large music collection, which includes compact discs (CDs) and vinyl records. KEOL can also be heard via a streaming Internet audio link from the station's website.

Current Shows

Ashe Reid
Rainbow Ride
An eccentric run of high-energy music specializing in chiptune, electronica, and video game soundtrack and remix, the Rainbow Ride is two hours of lovingly-crafted playlist to light up your afternoon as it turns to evening. Come for the Generation-Y console nostalgia, stay for a slightly different brand of it with SUPER ROBOT HOUR during the show’s back third, dedicated to playing the undying themes of classic and contemporary mecha shows.

Curran
The Madness
A chance to see the musical “madness” that goes on in my head and has impacted my life. Also a show for artists on the rise needing a chance to be heard.

Gym Noise
In the Groove
Two hours of funky, soul and disco. Predominately played with vinyl. All time eras will be covered. Typical DJ banter.

Papa Lory
Classic Rock Extravaganza
The Classic Rock Extravaganza is a journey through “true” classic rock music. It’s not just about the most popular artists and their most popular tracks; it’s about long-forgotten artists like Gentle Giant and Elf and obscure album tracks from those artists and others like such as Pink Floyd and Jefferson Airplane. It’s not just Beatles and Zeppelin; it’s much, much more.

Classic Country
Classic Country with Papa Lory is almost the antithesis of the Classic Rock Extravaganza. Classic country cherishes the early superstars and their greatest hits which increased the popularity of country/western music in the 1950′s and 1960′s and beyond. Classic country laid the foundation to what we hear today in modern country music, and it is celebrated here.

Rick Moody
The Lounge
New releases, old gems and a great variety of music from all genres. Not always what you expect. Not only music you want to hear, but music you NEED to hear.
