Hari Prasad Kovelamudi, is an anaesthetist and the CEO for Central Region of the first corporate chain of hospitals in India, the Apollo Hospitals Group, overseeing the group's operations in Telangana (Hyderabad, Karimnagar, Secunderabad), Andhra Pradesh, (Aragonda(Vishakapatnam, Kakinada), Gujarat (Ahmedabad), Karnataka (Bengaluru, Mysore), Maharashtra (Pune, Mumbai, Lavasa), Odisha (Bhubaneshwar), Muscat and Africa (Tanzania,[1] Zambia,[2] Kenya[3]).

Prasad is the first doctor outside Europe to be honoured with a fellowship of the College of Emergency Medicine, UK and the first in India to receive a fellowship of the International Federation for Emergency Medicine.[4] He is also the course director for paramedic training program in collaboration with Stanford University, USA, Emergency Medicine Programs with the Royal College of General Practitioners, UK and College of Emergency Medicine, UK.[5] He is also on the board of directors of the Apollo Institute of Hospital Administration (AIHA).[6] He was the founder President of Society for Emergency Medicine and is a member of Indian Society of Anesthesiology and Indian Society of Critical Care Medicine.[7]

Early life, education and cricket

Prasad was born in the Hyderabad city of Telangana on 13 June 1964. He did his schooling in the Hyderabad Public School at Begumpet, where he was a cricketer. He opened for the Hyderabad Ranji Trophy team and scored 72 on debut, besides bowling 4 maiden overs and taking one wicket.[8] He represented Hyderabad in the Ranji Trophy for 3 consecutive seasons between 1981 and 1984.[9] He got into Gandhi Medical College in sports quota.

Career

During the final years of MBBS, Prasad practiced in his family-run Sridevi Nursing Home at Secunderabad. Later, he joined Apollo Hospitals as a consultant anesthetist in the late 1990s. He was later promoted to management, and he attended the Hospital Management Program at the Singapore Management University in 2007.

Prasad was on the CNN-IBN Swine Flu discussion panel hosted by Rajdeep Sardesai along with central health minister Gulam Nabi Azad and Pune MP Suresh Kalmadi.[10] He Was also a speaker at the 5th World Healthcare Congress Held in Brussels, Belgium in 2009.[7] He was a speaker at a 2011 TED (conference) held at Silver Oaks school in Hyderabad.[11] He organized the International Congress For Patient Safety 2011 in Hyderabad in 2011.[12] He organised the Onco-Robotic Surgery Week in January 2013.[13] Prasad gave an inspiring insight into medicine at an educational fest, VEDA 2013 at Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani – Hyderabad where he was invited as a guest of honour.[14]

Prasad delivered a keynote address at the annual general meeting of the Zambian Medical Association in 2013.[15] He was an advisory board member[16] and an honorary speaker[17] at the International Congress on Patient Safety, 2013. Prasad spoke about the lack of advanced healthcare facilities in rural areas, the importance of providing rural areas with tertiary healthcare and how Apollo's innovation model is aimed to tackle this issue at the Sankalp Unconvention Summit 2013.[18][19] He spoke about the importance of personalised medicines and his plans to introduce such medicines to India during the 30th anniversary celebrations of Apollo Hospitals.[20] Prasad joined hands with the MAB International Hospital to assist Ghanaians and Africans as whole in their health needs at an affordable cost[21] and led the team of medical experts for doing feasibility studies towards establishing a referral centre in telemedicine in Ghana.[22] Dr. Prasad met the Prime Minister of Fiji, Mr. Voreqe Bainimarama and presented a detailed plan to develop integrated cancer care services in Fiji to benefit the people of Fiji and the region.[23]
