K-256 is a state highway in the U.S. state of Kansas. The highway functions as a business loop of US-56, serving Marion. It is entirely within Marion County.
Route description
K-256 begins at US-77 east of Marion, traveling through town, including the downtown area. After four miles (6 km), the road turns north for one mile (1.6 km), connecting to US-56. Much of K-256 through town has a 20 to 30 mph (48 km/h) speed limit. About a mile west of Marion, the road turns north on an old alignment of a Marion County road. At that intersection, Old US-56 continues west through Hillsboro. At US-56, the county route resumes north through Pilsen.[2]
History
K-256 first appeared on the 1991-92 KDOT state map. It follows a former US-56 alignment through Marion. It was formed when a bypass of both Hillsboro and Marion was completed.[3]
As of January 2013, KDOT has proposed transferring the mileage of K-256 to Marion County.[4]
