Justin Flom (born April 29, 1986)[1] is an American magician. Australia’s TimeOut dubbed him as the “Heart throb” of the first boy band of magicians.[2] He’s a regular guest on The Ellen Degeneres Show[3] and was named Up and Coming Entertainer of the Year (2013) by Las Vegas Weekly.[4] Justin Flom is particularly known for his youtube series, Magic Block Party, which features his signature trick "Water to Coke."[2] His performance has been described as "check this out" magic for the MTV Generation, which diverges from the traditional "stuffing of women into cabinets and stabbing them with swords."[5][6]

Early life

Born in Edina, Minnesota April 29, 1986. Raised in a family of magicians (his father and uncle were practicing magicians). Justin started doing magic on stage at the age of two. As the Flom Family grew with younger brothers (Josh and Jordan) and one sister (Janelle) they all got in on the act billing themselves as the Flom Kids.[1] Justin was homeschooled and spent most of his time learning magic in his basement surrounded by magical antiques and secret passageways built by his father.[7]

Career

In 2005 Justin skipped college and instead took his show to The Branson Mall Music Theatre in Branson, Missouri[1] where he was the youngest headliner on the strip.[8] After one year, he decided to build a custom-designed theater above the Majestic Steak House. July 1, 2006 Justin opened The Imaginary Theatre and Magic Parlor, a three room magical experience that culminated in an intimate 108-seat theater stage show.[1]

Considering Branson, MO to be an expensive learning experience, Justin reinvented himself in 2011 when fellow magician, Rick Lax, suggested he make more magic videos online. Justin sold his large magic boxes an instead started working on new effects with coffee, coke, Lifesavers and Nerds.[7]

Justin’s Magic Block Party, filmed in Eden Prairie summer of 2012, caught the eye of Ellen Degeneres and she put him on The Ellen Degeneres Show.[8][9] In 2013, after his 2nd appearance on Ellen in which Justin scared the daylights out of Ellen's staff,[3] Justin Flom was named Best Up and Coming Entertainer of the Year by Las Vegas Weekly.[4]

Justin entertained the studio audience of the CMA Christmas Special with magic in Nashville, TN.[10]

In 2014, James Galea formed the Band of Magicians with Justin Flom, Justin Willman, and Nate Staniforth.[2] They are not some mystical collective but instead a bunch of ordinary dudes who dabble in the extraordinary. Justin Flom takes charge[11] and is the “heart throb” of the group who often wears the kind of satisfied half-smile of the only person in the room who knows what’s going on. Justin does new-school card tricks and even a trick with everyone’s phone and Instagram.[2] The audience loved the magic during the Band of Magicians run, standing ovations and packed houses were proof.[5]

In 2014, Syfy Television network filmed a new show, Wizard Wars, starring Justin Flom along with Penn and Teller and several other magicians competing to create magic out of ordinary objects on the spot.[12][13] Justin is also an associate producer of Wizard Wars[14] and the show is based off an idea of Rick Lax's from Justin's YouTube channel.[15] Justin is lead Wizard on the series.

In 2015 Justin partnered with country music group Florida Georgia Line for their arena tour titled Anything Goes. Justin opened each show with magic in the audience and on stage making front row tickets appear in a girl's mouth and combining music and magic in an elaborate card trick. Justin recently performed his brand of magic for a sold out audience in Madison Square Garden.[16]

Most of Flom's time is spent making videos performing magic around the United States. His wife, Jocelynn Flom, films all the videos while Justin personally edits the footage.[17]

Personal life

Justin married Jocelynn Sharp in 2009. The couple then moved to Las Vegas to partner with top magic creators.[8] He is rarely without a hot coffee and his favorite restaurants in the country (Lions Tap and Original Pancake House) are in his hometown of Eden Prairie.[17]

Justin has appeared on numerous local television shows, NBC's The Today Show and the Ellen Degeneres Show numerous times.[8]
