The Jurby Transport Museum (Manx: Thie Tashtee Arraghey Yurby) is a transport museum in Jurby on the Isle of Man. It is the largest transport museum on the island. The museum is based in a former aircraft hangar.
The museum is operated by a group of volunteers who are members of the Manx Transport Trust.
History
The museum was prepared by a group of volunteers prior to its opening. The museum opened to the public in April 2010 by the then Chief Minister of the Isle of Man, Tony Brown.[1]
Since the museum opened, there have been over 30,000 visitors.[2]
Collection
Buses
The museum's collection primarily consists of buses manufactured by Leyland.
The most common vehicle type at the museum consists of four Leyland Olympians - four of which (58, 64, 83) were new to Isle of Man National Transport. The other Olympian (99) is the last second hand bus to enter service on the Isle of Man - ex Dublin Bus RH36.
Other common vehicle types at the Museum are four Leyland Atlanteans - including an ex SELNEC Atlantean with a very rare Park Royal body - and an ex Merseyside PTE "Jumbo" Atlantean (1235), three Leyland Titans, two AEC Regent IIIs and a Regent V - the latter being the last double decker ever built by AEC.
The island's first preserved low floor bus - a Dennis Dart SLF with Marshall Capital bodywork - is currently undergoing restoration at the museum.
The bus collection also consists of the island's only privately preserved coach - a Bedford YRQ with Duple Dominant bodywork.
Rail
At the museum a display dedicated to Ramsey's Queen's Pier Tramway which includes an original locomotive and carriage can be found as well as an Upper Douglas Cable Tramway tramcar.
Cars and trucks
There are a number of different cars on display at the museum including two Minis, a BMW Isetta and a very rare steam car.
A Sentinel steam wagon and a JCK ERF wagon also make up part of the collection.
Facilities
The museum has a shop which is former Douglas Bay Horse Tramway tram number 22. Car parking is available on site.
Opening times
The museum is open every weekend and Bank Holidays during the Summer and Sunday and Bank Holidays during the winter. Admission is free.
