Julie Foucher (born December 26, 1988) is an American CrossFit athlete and medical student. She has participated in the CrossFit Games four times in the past, and has historically been one of the most successful women at the event. Foucher is also a member of the CrossFit Level 1 Seminar Staff.[2] She attends the University of Michigan, where she pursues a career in the medical field.
CrossFit career
Foucher developed her strength and skill through an early career in gymnastics. In high school, she also participated in track and field. She began CrossFit in the summer of 2009. But within a year, Foucher placed second at the Central East Regionals. This allowed her to qualify for the 2010 CrossFit Games, in which she finished fifth place. In the next year's Central East Regionals, her team won first place, giving her a ticket to the 2011 CrossFit Games. At the 2011 event, Foucher placed fifth for the second consecutive appearance. For 2012, she easily passed the regionals and finished second at the Games. She delicately balanced her medical career and athletics. Foucher did not participate in 2013, as she took time off CrossFit to address the work demands of medical school. She was named one of the "Most Interesting People" of 2013 by the Cleveland Magazine.[3] However, she returned in 2014, finishing second at the OC Throwdown, a fitness competition. In addition, she won the Central East regionals, helped Team USA triumph at the invitational, and placed third at the 2014 CrossFit Games.[2][4]
Foucher has been renowned for her work ethic. Michigan-based coach, Doug Chapman, said, "What makes her special is how hard she works."[5] Former Cleveland gymnast, Dominique Moceanu, said, "Julie is more ready than ever, and I'm really excited for the world to see."[5]
Medical career
Foucher is currently a medical student at the University of Michigan, where she plans to be a physician. She entered the field because she "developed a better understanding of life's purpose" through her life. According to her official website, CrossFit opened her eyes to the power of fitness in achieving maximal health and fulfillment. She plans to return to full-time medical training in the future. Foucher said, "In order to bring my passion for CrossFit and fitness together with my medical career, I need to be focusing on my medical career."[2][3]
