Julia Bonk (born 29 April 1986, Burg bei Magdeburg, East Germany) is a Left Party politician in the Landtag of Saxony. Elected at age 18, she became the youngest member of a parliament in Germany.[1]

Early life

As a 14-year-old, Bonk became a member of the Dresden City Student Council and was also elected Vice-Speaker of the Students' Council for the State of Saxony. Two years later she was elected Speaker.

In the summer of 2004, Bonk finished her school education with a bilingual (German-French) Abitur. Beginning in October 2004, she studied Politics and History at TU Dresden.

Career

Bonk became a member of the Landtag of Saxony in 2004 directly after finishing school, and is now a member of the Parliamentary Group of Left Party. She became nationally known as the youngest member of a Parliament in Germany. The newspaper Badische Zeitung counted that 87 international papers printed her picture. In 2006, Bonk officially became a member of Left Party.

During the fourth legislative period of the Landtag of Saxony (2004-2009), Bonk was member and Vice-Spokeswoman of the parliamentary committee on School and Sport and member of the committee on Science and University, Culture and Media. In the current fifth legislative period (since 2009), she is a member of the committee on Legal Affairs, the Constitution, and Europe.

Until 2009, she was one of ten Federal-Speakers of the Youth Organisation Solid: The Socialist Youth. Along with Christoph Spehr, she is speaker of The Emancipatory Left, a current within the Left Party. Bonk served later served on the National Committee of the Left Party.
