Judith Benhamou-Huet is a French journalist, independent curator[1] and author specializing in art and the art market.[2] She is a weekly columnist for the French newspaper Les Échos[3] and the magazine Le Point.[4] Benhamou-Huet is the author of several books, namely Art Business (2001),[5] published in English with the title The Worth of Art,[6] followed in 2007 by Art Business (2),[7] and The Worth of Art (2), books that analyze the principles of valuation in the contemporary art market.[8] Recently she wrote a biographical account about the artist Robert Mapplethorpe Dans la vie noire et blanche de Robert Mapplethorpe[9]
Career
Writing
Judith Benhamou-Huet was born and raised in France.[5] She is a weekly columnist for the French newspaper Les Échos[3] and the magazine Le Point.[4] She is also involved in Les Echos TV[10] where she speaks every week about an exhibition.[11]
Benhamou-Huet is the author of several books, namely Art Business in 2001,[5] published in English with the title The Worth of Art,[6] followed in 2007 by Art Business (2) [7] and The Worth of Art (2) that analyze the principles of valuation in the contemporary art market.[8]
In 2008, she authored Global Collectors, a book written in both French and English and published by Phébus in which she profiled 120 international art collectors.[12] In 2012 she wrote Les artistes ont toujours aimé l'argent. D'Albrecht Durer à Damien Hirst,[13] a study of notable artists throughout history and their relationship to money, published by Grasset.[8][14]
In 2014, Judith wrote a biographical account about Robert Mapplethorpe called Dans la vie noire et blanche de Robert Mapplethorpe[15] after having interviewed forty persons who knew the artist. She also published a survey of interviews about Robert Mapplethorpe giving unique accounts about the life and intimacy of the artist by relatives, friends,curators and boy friends in Mapplethorpe vivant, réponse à des questions.[16]
Curator
As an independent curator, in 2009 Benhamou-Huet produced an exhibition titled “Warhol TV”[8] in which she explored Andy Warhol's connection to television,[17] and also wrote the exhibition catalogue.[18] “Warhol TV” was exhibited in Paris in 2009 at La Maison Rouge,[19] home to the Antoine de Galbert foundation (ISBN 978-2-9533753-0-5),[20] the Berardo Museum in Lisbon in 2010 (ISBN 978-989-31-0004-2), and in several sites in Brazil including Rio de Janeiro (Oi Futuro Flamengo), Belo Horizonte (Oi Futoro) and São Paulo (Sesc Pinheiros) (ISBN 978-85-7820-057-2).[21]
In 2014, Benhamou-Huet was co-curator of the exhibition "Mapplethorpe-Rodin" at Musée Rodin in Paris and associated curator for the Robert Mapplethorpe retrospective at Grand Palais.
