Biography

Elquezabal was born in 1781, in San Antonio, Texas, to Juan Bautista Elguézabal, former Governor of Texas between 1800 and 1805, and María Gertrudis Jiménez. However, Elquezabal was joined to Spanish Army in his youth and he spend the most of his professional career in Coahuila (modern Mexico). There he was Army´s Captain and Río Grande Presidio´s Commander and, like his father, a attached Inspector in the Coahuila and Texas Presidios.[1] Eventually, Elquézabal ascended to Colonel.[2]

In August 30, 1834, Elquezabal was appointed Interim Governor of Texas by the City Hall of Monclova, Coahuila, remaining the charge until Agustín Viesca was appointed as new official Governor of Texas, leaving the charge in May 12, 1835.

Elquezabal participated in the Texas Revolution, being the commander of First Company of Tamaulipas. In December 10, 1835, he was captured with Martín Perfecto de Cos, during Siege of Bexar, being sent back to Matamoros, Mexico, place where he died in 1840.[1]
