Josh Weller (born Joshua Brent Weller, c. 1989 [1]) is an English pop singer-songwriter and podcast host, based in London.
Career
Weller's first solo single "Pretty Girls" was released on Yodel in 2008,[2] followed by EP Push, again on Yodel in 2009,[3] produced by Ryan Hadlock who had recently completed Gossip's Standing in the Way of Control and Johnny Flynn & The Sussex Wit's A Larum.[4] Both releases sold out, with "Push" entering the UK Indie Chart at number 11.[5][6]
Weller plays almost all of the instruments on his recordings, but members of Noisettes and Mumford and Sons have also played on his releases.[7] He idolizes Chet Baker, and his voice is often compared to that of Baker's.[8][9][10]
Weller has toured and played with Mumford and Sons,[11] The Noisettes,[12] The Maccabees (Orlando Weeks, lead vocalist created Josh's 'trademark' Logo), Florence and The Machine, Born Ruffians,[13] The XX, Johnny Flynn and Paloma Faith [14] since he began playing live in 2008. Weller describes his music as pop, and sites his influences as Chet Baker, Randy Newman, Paul Simon, Woody Allen, Richard Pryor and De La Soul.[10]
In 2009, Weller released the seasonal single "It's Christmas (And I Hate You)", a duet with Paloma Faith.[15] He also wrote two songs for Brazilian singer Cibelle's 2010 album Las Venus Resort Palace Hotel.[16]
In March 2010, Weller played Gaymers' Camden Crawl, filling the venue, with a 200-strong queue into the street during his performance.[17]
In February 2011, Boy George guested with Weller at The Jazz Café, for HMV's Next Big Thing.[18][19]
In 2013, Weller played support on the Stereophonics' Graffiti on the Train tour. In April, Weller released his EP Mr Hypochondriac. The promotional video for the EP claimed that Weller 'created his own Wikipedia page'.[20] On June that year, Weller co-headlined Communion's Bushstock, alongside: Willy Mason, Scott Matthews, Ethan Johns and Theme Park.[21] On 17 June, Weller announced his forthcoming single release, "I Forgot To Tell You You're Beautiful", and uploaded a video for it.[22] That evening on Channel 4 television, BAFTA award-winning series, Made in Chelsea's season five finale featured the track.[22]
In April 2014, Weller started the 'Excitable Boy Podcast', a weekly comedy and music podcast. Guests have included Gemma Arterton, Lianne La Havas, Geoff Lloyd, Steve Furst and comedian Alex Edelman.
