Joseph I. Bentley

Joseph I. Bentley was a major real estate lawyer in California. Since his retirement in 2003 he has served as an adjunct law professor at Brigham Young University (BYU) and as the business and legal documents editor for the Joseph Smith Papers Project.

Bentley received his bachelor's degree from BYU and then went on to receive his J.D. degree from the University of Chicago. He then joined the law firm of Latham and Watkins where he remained until 2003. Among other projects with Latham and Watkins Bentley handled the acquisition and financing of Pepperdine University's Malibu Campus.

Bentley wrote with Dallin H. Oaks "Joseph Smith and the Legal Process: In the Wake of the Steamboat Nauvoo" which was published in the Brigham Young University Law Review.

Bentley is a Latter-day Saint.
