Joseph D. Hackmey is an Israeli businessman, insurance company executive, actuary, investor, and an art and stamp collector.

Art News listed Hackmey as one of the fifty biggest art collectors in the world. [2] He has formed one of the most important collections of Modern art 1869 – 1998, and the largest collection known of Israeli art. [3] His philatelic collections of postage stamps and postal history have obtained several first prizes and Grand Prix at international exhibitions.[4][5]

Hackmey is currently on the Board of Governors of the Weizmann Institute of Science, Tel Aviv University, The Hebrew University, the Israel Museum, and the Tel Aviv Museum of Art.

Education

Joseph Hackmey is a graduate of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology – receiving his B. Sc. in Mathematics just before he turned 19, followed by an M. Sc. in Electrical Engineering. He also received a Post-Graduate Diploma in Actuarial Science and Business Administration from The Hebrew University of Jerusalem, an M.A. in Judaic Studies from New York University, and qualified by examination to the Fellowship of the Institute of Actuaries in London.

Early career

After completing a three year military service, Hackmey joined his father at the Israel Phoenix Assurance company, working in the life insurance department, later becoming the manager of the department before being appointed the chief executive of the company at the age of 31, a position he held until 2002 when the company was sold by him. During the years of Hackmey's service in the company, it grew from 6% of the insurance market of Israel to 20%, and its yearly net income increased by over 100 times in terms of US dollars.

At the age of 38, he was elected by the industry to serve as Chairman of the Israeli Insurance Association for three years, being the youngest by 15 years of all previous chairmen. He has also served as Chairman of the Israeli Life Offices Association, Chairman of the Israeli chess Federation, (while in secondary school in Switzerland, he won the youth, up to age 16, chess championship of the Canton of St. Gallen), member of the board of directors of Mehadrin Plantations Ltd, Dubek Cigarette Company, City Fire Insurance Company of London, Khefetz Development & Building Company, and his four insurance companies based in Tel Aviv.

Personal life

Joseph was married to Hava Evelyn Hackmey, née Katz. They have two sons David and Tal, and a daughter Billy.

Philanthropy

Joseph Hackmey supports philanthropic causes in the areas of education, art, music, culture, young talents, and chess. Bnai Brith International of Washington DC awarded him the Bnai Brith International Humanitarian Award for the year 2000. Tel Aviv University bestowed on him an honorary doctorate degree in 2009 in recognition of his contributions to Israeli society and culture.
