The José Finkel Trophy is a Brazilian swimming tournament disputed by teams. It is considered the Brazilian 'Winter Trophy', and is one of main two events of the Brazilian Swimming calendar, together with Maria Lenk Trophy. The tournament is named after a young Brazilian swimmer from Curitiba, who died at age 17 in 1970 due to cancer. The first edition was disputed in 1972, in a 25m swimming. The last edition was held in September, 2014, at Guaratinguetá[1] and was a qualification tournament for the World Swimming Championships 2014 - Short Course.[2]
The trophy has hegemony of teams from the states of Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, and Minas Gerais. The first champion was Botafogo de Futebol e Regatas. The most successful is Esporte Clube Pinheiros, with 13 titles. The current champion is Minas Tênis Clube, which is also the current champion of the Maria Lenk Trophy.
