Jorge Gomes da Silva Filho (born 18 May 1954), commonly known as Jorge Gomes , is a Brazilian retired footballer who played as striker.
Over the course of 13 seasons, he amassed 260 Primeira Liga matches and 60 goals.
Career
Born in Rio de Janeiro, Gomes played for CR Vasco da Gama before moving to Portugal. After a brief spell at C.F. União de Lamas, he signed with Boavista F.C., spending three seasons, before joining S.L. Benfica in 11 August 1979.
Gomes notability in Benfica came from the fact that he was the first ever foreigner to play for the club, after more than 75 years of strictly Portuguese players.
In Benfica, he faced serious competition from Nené, Reinaldo, Filipović and César, so he was seldom used, and after a disagreement with Sven-Göran Eriksson, he moved to S.C. Braga on 4 August 1982, where he would spent the almost entirety of his career, amassing 170 league matches and nearly 40 goals.[1][2]
