Following his graduation, Sutherland was encouraged to write to the Island's media for work. He soon landed a job at BBC Radio Shetland.

Early career

His first taste of journalism was with Radio Shetland but left in 2003 to build his career. He soon landed a job at BBC Sport as a broadcast journalist. He then left the BBC for Shetland Weekly but returned soon after. He then landed the job of assistant producer of Sportscene.

Presenting career

He now is the main presenter of the Sunday night SPFL highlights show, Sportscene.[3] Sutherland also presented Keeping Loch Lomond, a conservation show which discovers how the National Park authority deals with developing whilst conserving the Loch Lomond area.[4]

Sutherland can also be seen presenting the sports segment for Reporting Scotland as a back-up to David Currie. He is one of two Shetlanders working for BBC Scotland's sport, the other being Phil Goodlad, who is from Yell.

He is also set to co-present a new current affairs program for BBC Two. Scotland 2014 will be broadcast in June 2014.
