Jonathan (“Jon”) Thompson (born 1964) has been the Permanent Under-Secretary of State (PUS) at the UK Ministry of Defence (MOD) since September 2012.

Prior to that he was Director General of Finance at the MOD, having also held senior finance roles in North Somerset Council, OFSTED and the UK Department for Education and Skills (United Kingdom) .[1]

Background

Thompson was born in Norwich,[2] and educated at Earlham High School, Norwich City College and Anglia Polytechnic, which later became Anglia Ruskin University. He became CIPFA qualified in 1989. [1]

Career

Thompson joined the Civil Service in 2004, as OFSTED’s first finance director.[2] He joined the Ministry of Defence as Director General of Finance in 2009, [1]becoming PUS in 2012 as a result of Ursula Brennan moving from MOD to the Ministry of Justice.

Personal Life

Thompson married in 1987, and has three sons. [1] He is a supporter of Norwich City Football Club, [2] and lives in Cambridgeshire. [2]
