Johno Johnson

The Hon John Richard "Johno" Johnson KCSG (born 26 July 1930) is a former Australian politician. Born in Murwillumbah, New South Wales, he was a grocer and trade union official before entering politics. He married Pauline Christina Russell, with whom he has two sons and two daughters. He served as director of the Prince of Wales Hospital in Sydney and was chair of the Catholic Newspaper Company, publishers of the Catholic Weekly. He was also a member of the New South Wales Board of Lotteries and the federal Cancer Council.^[1]

In 1976, he was elected to the New South Wales Legislative Council for the Australian Labor Party, having been Treasurer of the New South Wales party branch. He served as the Council's President from 1978 to 1991, and remained a member of the Legislative Council until his resignation in 2001. He was replaced by Michael Costa.^[1]

Johnson is a Fellow of Warrane College UNSW^[2]

Johnson has been awarded a life membership of the Labor Party, and a papal knight of the Order of St. Gregory the Great.^[1]
