John Mulaney (born August 26, 1982) is an American comedian, actor, writer, and producer. He is best known for his work as a writer on Saturday Night Live (SNL) and as a standup comedian.[3][4] He is the creator and star of the Fox sitcom Mulaney. The series was a semi-autobiographical series about his life as a standup comedian and premiered on October 5, 2014.

Early life

Mulaney was born in Chicago, Illinois to Ellen (née Stanton), a law professor, and Charles W. Mulaney, Jr., an attorney, both of Irish Catholic descent.[5][6][7][8]

Mulaney's maternal great-grandfather was George J. Bates, a Republican mayor of Salem, Massachusetts, who also served as a congressman from that state. His maternal great-uncle is William H. Bates, who also served as a US congressman. Mulaney attended St. Clement School, St. Ignatius College Prep[2] and Georgetown University, where he studied English Literature.[2][9]

Career

Saturday Night Live

In addition to writing for SNL, Mulaney has appeared on the show's "Weekend Update" segment.[10][11][12] He and SNL actor Bill Hader co-created the recurring SNL character Stefon.[13] Mulaney was nominated for the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Writing for a Variety Series with the SNL writing staff from 2009-2012.[14] Mulaney won a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics at the 63rd Primetime Emmy Awards with Justin Timberlake, Seth Meyers and Katreese Barnes.[15]

Stand-up comedy

In addition to his work on SNL, Mulaney has worked for a number of years as a stand-up comedian. He has performed once on Live at Gotham, once on Conan, once on Jimmy Kimmel Live, twice on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon, twice on Late Night With Conan O'Brien, and once on Comedy Central Presents. Mulaney also released a stand-up comedy album entitled The Top Part in 2009,[16] and a stand-up comedy special called New In Town in 2012. Both were produced with Comedy Central. He frequently tours his comedy shows, sometimes with his Mulaney co-star Seaton Smith.

In May 2013, NBC passed on picking up Mulaney's semi-autobiographical sitcom pilot, titled Mulaney.[17] However, in June 2013, Fox Broadcasting Company ordered a new script as the network reviews whether to order the production of several episodes.[18]

In October 2013, Fox announced that they picked up the show for a six-episode season order.[19] Mulaney is the creator, producer, and writer of his eponymous series, and stars, along with veteran comedic actor Martin Short.

On July 5, 2014, Mulaney married make-up artist Annamarie Tendler.
