John II, Count of Gorizia (c. 1433 – 22 May 1462 in Lienz) was the penultimate member of the Meinhardiner dynasty. He was the ruling Count of Gorizia (modern-day North-East Italy) from 1454 to 1462.
Life
John II was the eldest son of Count Henry VI from his second marriage with Catherine, the daughter of the Hungarian Palatine Nicholas of Gara.
He was held hostage in Celje from 1444 to 1454. After his release, he took up government in Gorizia. He also claimed the County of Ortenburg, however, this claim was unsuccessful. He then sacked Ortenburg. He was later forced to cede twelve castles to the count of Ortenburg as a repareation for this sacking; these castles included his residence Bruck Castle in Lienz.
He was married to Elisabeth, the daughter of Count Ulrich II of Celje, although this marriage was childless.
He died on 22 May 1462 and was deeply mourned by his subjects, due to him having been very popular.
