John Holeman

John David Holeman was a professional surfer in the 1980s and 1990s. Holeman was inducted into the East Coast Surfing Hall Of Fame on January 13, 2012, at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, Florida. (Other inductees that year included Tim Briers, Sean Slater, Pat McCoy Wilcox, Barbie Belyea, Larry Miniard, photographer Kevin Welsh, and surf industry pioneers Kirk Cottrell, Shagg Catri and Bill Feinberg.) [1]

Early life and professional career

Holeman was born in Washington, D.C. in 1963 and moved to Florida in 1967. He began surfing at the age of five. Holeman advanced through the East Coast ranks and took many NSSA and Eastern Surfing Association (ESA) titles before he turned pro in 1984, receiving the rookie of the year award. [2]

Health issues

Holeman contracted a virus that damaged his heart after a bout of pneumonia in 2002. He received a pacemaker and defibrillator at the age of 39. He had a heart transplant surgery in 2003. [3]

Coaching

The severity of his injury made surfing hard for him and he started Professional Surfing Instruction (PSI) in Satellite Beach to coach other surfers. Holeman currently works with up and coming pro- ams and established pros.[4]
