John Harvey (?? - 1679) was the governor of Albemarle Sound, in The Carolinas, in 1679.
Harvey was born between 1628 and 1630, in England, to Thomas Harvey and Mary.
John Harvey probably bought the actual peninsula Harvey's Neck, NC, in the Albemarle Sound, in Albemarle County (modern Perquimans County), North Carolina. Many historians believe John Harvey to be the first settler of Albemarle. John Harvey was one of the leaders of the factions anti-property of the region. However, he was known for being highly respected by the population of the colony, even among his political rivals. In February 1679 he was appointed chairman and acting governor, after the news came that the former governor, Seth Sothel, had been captured by pirates. However, his administration as governor ended too soon, prematurely dying that year, in Albemarle County.
Harvey married Dorothy Tooke, in Isle Of Wight County, Virginia, having with she three children: Robert, Richard and Thomas Harvey (future diputy governor of North Carolina).[1]
