John Joseph Donahoe II (born April 30, 1960)[2] is president and CEO of eBay Inc, since March 31, 2008.[3]

Early life

John Donahoe was born in Evanston, Illinois.[4] His father was an accountant at Price Waterhouse in Chicago.[5]

He graduated from New Trier High School in Winnetka, Illinois.[5]

Education

He received a BA in Economics from Dartmouth and an MBA from Stanford Business School.[1]

Career

After his senior year of high school, a friend’s dad asked him to work at his Schlitz beer distribution company. “You’ll make good money,” he said. It was a union job and the first requirement was that he join the International Brotherhood of Teamsters.[6]

Bain & Company

Before joining eBay he worked for Bain & Company (a worldwide consulting firm based in Boston) for 20 years, starting as an associate consultant and becoming the firm's president and CEO in 1999.[7]

eBay

In March 2005 he was hired as president of eBay Marketplaces. His role was to focus on eBay's core business, which accounts for a large percentage of the company's revenues.[3] He made more than forty acquisitions, including Shopping.com and StubHub, and the classifieds sites Gumtree and LoQUo, and most recently, Shutl.

In his current role Mr. Donahoe oversees eBay's two modules, eBay Marketplaces, and PayPal.

Some eBay share-holders believe that given eBay's profitability the company ought to be paying dividends, and that Mr. Donahoe being responsible for overseeing eBay (a company owned by its share-holders - for the benefit of its share-holders) should take steps to introduce the payment of such dividends.

Other

He serves on the Boards of Directors of both eBay Inc. and Intel Corp.[8]

Politics

Donahoe has contributed to both parties, both to Republican candidate Congressman David Dreier of California as well as two Democrat candidates: Kirsten Gillibrand of New York, and Barbara Boxer[9] of California.

Personal life

He is married to Eileen Donahoe (née Chamberlain), the U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva, Switzerland, since November 2009.[10]

They have four children, three sons and a daughter, and live in Portola Valley, California.[11][12]
