John Barton is a professional rugby league footballer of the 1950s and '60s, playing at representative level for Great Britain, and at club level for Leigh and Wigan, as a Prop, i.e. number 8 or 10, during the era of contested scrums.

Playing career

International honours

John Barton won caps for Great Britain while at Wigan in 1960 against France, and in 1961 against New Zealand.[2]

Rugby Football League Championship final appearances

John Barton played Open side-Prop, i.e. number 8 in Wigan's 27–3 victory over Wakefield Trinity in the 1959–60 Rugby Football League Championship final at Odsal Stadium, Bradford on Saturday 21 May 1960.[3]

Challenge Cup final appearances

John Barton played Open side-Prop, i.e. number 8, and scored a try in Wigan's 9–13 victory over Workington Town in the 1957–58 Challenge Cup final at Wembley Stadium on Saturday 10 May 1958,[4] and played Blind side-Prop, i.e. number 10 in the 30–13 victory over Hull in the 1958–59 Challenge Cup final at Wembley Stadium on Saturday 9 May 1959,[5]

Rugby League County League appearances

John Barton played in Wigan's 1958–59, and 1961–62 Lancashire League victories.[6]
