Johanna Karolina von Trapp (7 September 1919 – 25 November 1994) was the sixth child of Georg von Trapp and his first wife, Agatha (née Whitehead). She was a member of the Trapp Family Singers, whose lives were the inspiration for the play and film The Sound of Music. She was portrayed as the character "Marta".

Early life

Named after her paternal aunt, Johanna von Trapp had brown hair and brown eyes. She grew up in Zell am See with her siblings: Rupert (1911–1992) Agathe (1913–2010), Maria Franziska (1914-2014), Werner (1915–2007) and Hedwig (1917–1972). The last, Martina (1921–1951), was born in Klosterneuburg (Austria). The von Trapp Family moved from Zell-am-See to Klosterneuburg, because their home, a lake hotel called "Kitzsteinhorn", was flooded. Before living in the hotel, the von Trapp Family had lived on a farm called "Erlhof" near maternal relatives. In 1922, when Johanna was three years old, her mother died of scarlet fever and was buried in Klosterneuburg. The family moved to Salzburg-Aigen in 1925. In 1927, father Georg Ludwig von Trapp was remarried to Maria Augusta Kutschera. Georg and Maria Augusta had three children together: Rosmarie (born 1928 or 1929), Eleonore (born 1931), and Johannes (born 1939).

Career

The family left Austria in summer of 1938 and went to America when she was nearly nineteen years old. She sang first soprano in the family chorus together with her sister Agathe von Trapp. Von Trapp married Ernst Florian Winter on Easter Monday in 1948 and had seven children. She lived with her family — four daughters and three sons in both Austria and the United States. She became a naturalized United States citizen in 1948.

She worked together with her sisters Agathe and Maria Franziska in 1993 on an exhibition in Salzburg. In 1994, she died in Vienna after the effects of a stroke at the age of 75, and was buried in Vienna.[1]
