Dr. Joel Schlessinger is a board-certified dermatologist and cosmetic surgeon located in Omaha, Nebraska. He is the founder of Skin Specialists, P.C.,[1] the Advanced Skin Research Center,[2] the LovelySkin Spa,[3] LovelySkin.com[4] and LovelySkin retail store.[5] Dr. Schlessinger is also the founder and course director of the Cosmetic Surgery Forum[6] as well as the President Emeritus of the American Society of Cosmetic Dermatology and Aesthetic Surgery.[7]
Education
After graduating from high school in Irmo, South Carolina, Dr. Joel Schlessinger attended the University of Rhode Island, where he graduated Phi Beta Kappa and Summa Cum Laude. At Brown University, he studied the basic sciences of medical school and completed his clinical rotations at Baylor College of Medicine. He completed an internship and residency in pediatrics at the University of Alabama Children's Hospital in Birmingham, and pursued his dermatology residency at Barnes-Jewish Hospital at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, Missouri.[8]
Medical practice and clinical stores
Dr. Joel Schlessinger started his private practice in 1992. In 1993, he opened Skin Specialists, P.C. in Omaha.
He opened a clinical research facility in Nebraska, known as Advanced Skin Research Center, in 1993.
In 1997, LovelySkin Spa opened, providing spa-related services such as Botox injections, laser hair removal, liposuction and other cosmetic treatments. Full-time licensed and certified estheticians, trained by Dr. Schlessinger, perform medical and cosmetic procedures.
LovelySkin.com, an e-commerce website that sells dermatologist-recommended cosmeceuticals, started in 1997 as an extension of LovelySkin Spa.[9]
In 1999, Dr. Joel Schlessinger developed a skin care line called LovelySkin. The result of personal dermatology research, the product line includes acne care products, anti-aging products, exfoliants and sun care products. The key ingredients in the LovelySkin product line include amino fruit acids, vitamin C and Dead Sea minerals.
LovelySkin.com became a brick-and-mortar store in 2010 when Dr. Schlessinger opened LovelySkin in Omaha, Nebraska. It is the first exclusively cosmeceutical store in the United States[10] and news of the opening was covered by Omaha's KETV station.[11]
Dr. Schlessinger also developed a line with his son, Daniel, called FixMySkin. The patent-pending balm formula contains 1% hydrocortisone to help heal or repair such skin conditions as dry or cracked skin, eczema, psoriasis, seborrheic dermatitis, insect bites and more. The FixMySkin product line is featured in Shape Magazine [12] and Fitness Magazine.[13]
During the years 2002-2006, Dr. Schlessinger served as the president of the Nebraska Dermatology Society, winning the American Academy of Dermatology "Model Society" recognition award twice.
Dr. Schlessinger founded an interactive multi-specialty Continuing Medical Education symposium for dermatologists, cosmetic surgeons, residents, and fellows in 2009. Called the Cosmetic Surgery Forum, this symposium provides hands-on demonstrations, case discussions, research, treatment and techniques in dermatology and cosmetic surgery to many medical dermatology professionals.
Teaching and lectures
Dr. Joel Schlessinger teaches physicians and fellow dermatologists at a national level. He has instructed medical students and residents from Creighton University and the University of Nebraska Medical Center.
Interviews and awards
Dr. Joel Schlessinger has been interviewed by magazines about skin care and skincare products. His products have been featured by Elle Magazine, where he was awarded a 2011 Genius Award,[14] Shape Magazine,[15] Huffington Post,[16] the New York Times[17] and Martha Stewart Weddings.[18] Dr. Schlessinger has been named a Top Doctor by U.S. News & World Report.[19]
Dr. Schlessinger has been voted the Best Cosmetic Surgeon in Omaha by the Omaha Magazine Best of Omaha/WOWT Poll[20] as well as being named the Best Dermatologist and Best Cosmetic Surgeon in the Reader/KMTV Poll.
Philanthropy work
Dr. Schlessinger has conducted two relief aid trips to Haiti after the earthquake in 2010.[21] In addition to relief aid, his office makes donations to Rwanda charities and donates makeup to women's shelters.
