Joanna Jędrzejczyk (Polish pronunciation: [ˈjɔanna jɛ̃dʐejt͡ʂɨk]; born August 18, 1987) is a Polish mixed martial artist who competes in the women's strawweight division of the Ultimate Fighting Championship. She is the current UFC Women's Strawweight Champion and the third European champion in UFC history after Bas Rutten in 1999 and Andrei Arlovski in 2005. As of April 4, 2015 Sherdog and MMARising (Unified Women’s Mixed Martial Arts Rankings) list her as #1 female strawweight in the world, while Fight Matrix lists her as #2.[2][3][4] She is also a six-time world champion and four-time European champion in Muay Thai.
Early life
Joanna Jędrzejczyk was born in Olsztyn. She discovered Muay Thai as a teenager, while taking up fitness, and eventually pursued a career in competitions.[5][6]
Muay Thai career
Jędrzejczyk competed in Muay Thai for 10 years, winning over 60 matches and six championships.[7]
Mixed martial arts
Early career
Jędrzejczyk made her professional debut in mixed martial arts (MMA) on May 19, 2012 at SFT - MMA Fight Night Diva SPA against Sylwia Juskiewicz, winning via unanimous decision.[8] On December 8, 2012 at MFC 5 she defeated Lily Kazak via submission (rear-naked choke).[9] On June 20, 2013 at Battle of Moscow 12 she defeated the #1 Russian WMMA fighter Julia Berezikova via unanimous decision.[10]
At the end of June 2013, Jędrzejczyk was ranked in 7th place (cat.-55 kg) by Fightmatrix.com.
On June 7, 2014 at Cage Warriors Fighting Championship 69 she defeated Rosi Sexton via knockout (punch) in the second round.[11]
Ultimate Fighting Championship
Jędrzejczyk officially signed with the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) in July 2014.[12] She made her promotional debut on July 26, 2014 at UFC on Fox: Lawler vs. Brown against Juliana Lima.[13] She won the fight via unanimous decision.[14]
Jędrzejczyk next faced undefeated strawweight top contender Claudia Gadelha on December 13, 2014 at UFC on Fox 13.[15] She won the fight via split decision. The judges' decision caused controversies afterwards. A majority of the MMA media scored the bout in favor of Gadelha.[16]
Strawweight Champion
Jędrzejczyk faced Carla Esparza for the UFC Strawweight Championship on March 14, 2015 at UFC 185.[17] Jędrzejczyk won the one-sided bout via TKO in the second round, becoming the first UFC title-holder from Poland and first female European UFC champion.[6][18] Subsequently, Jędrzejczyk won a Performance of the Night bonus.[19]
Fighting style and coaches
A decorated kickboxer, Jędrzejczyk is known for precise and calculated striking.[20] While standing with opponents, she constantly varies between high punches and body shots, also utilizing knees, elbows, and high front kicks.[21][22]
During her Muay Thai career, Jędrzejczyk was trained by kickboxers Ernesto Hoost and Paul Slowinski. Upon making the transition to MMA, she began training with Szymon Bonkowski and Robert Drysdale.[6][20]
