Joan Sturgeon

Joan Kerr Sturgeon is a Scottish National Party politician and a councillor on North Ayrshire Council for the Irvine East ward in Cunninghame South. She is the mother of the Leader of the SNP, the Scottish First Minister, the MSP for Glasgow Southside, Nicola Sturgeon.

Sturgeon was first elected to North Ayrshire Council in the Scottish local elections, 2007, topping the poll with 2,293 first preferences and exceeding the quota on the first count. She was re-elected in the Scottish local elections, 2012, again topping the poll in the ward with 1,045 first preferences and helping to bring in a running mate at the expense of the Scottish Liberal Democrats sitting councillor.

Following the elections the SNP had gained four seats on the council to displace Labour as the largest party for the first time in over thirty years. The SNP then formed a minority administration with the support of Independents. On May 23, 2012 she was elected provost of the new council.
