João Ricardo Silva Afonso (born 28 May 1990), simply known as João Afonso is a Portuguese professional footballer who plays for Vitória Guimarães as a defender.
Club career
Born in Castelo Branco, Afonso kicked off his career with Benfica Castelo Branco in 2008 where he also spent a part of the youth academy. He was later promoted to the position of the club-captain. In the 2013–14 season, he played in the promotion play-offs against Vitória B for Segunda Liga.[1]
In June 2014, it was reported that Vitória Guimarães wanted to sign the defender. Also in the race to sign him were Maritimo and Gil Vicente.[2] Finally he joined Vitória.[3] He made his debut against Penafiel coming as a substitute for Moreno.[4]
