Jesse Hogan (born 12 February 1995) is a professional Australian rules footballer, currently playing for the Melbourne Football Club in the Australian Football League (AFL).

Junior career

A Newman College and AIS-AFL Academy graduate, Hogan played junior football for the Wembley Downs Junior Football Club and the Marist Junior Football Club before joining the Claremont Football Club Colts, where he played four games in 2011 and 12 games in 2012.[1] He also represented Western Australia in the 2012 AFL Under-18 Championships where he averaged 13.6 disposals, 6.4 marks and 1.2 goals.[2]

Professional career

On 9 October 2012, Hogan was acquired by the Melbourne Football Club with the second selection in the 2012 AFL Mini-draft.[2][3] As he was a pre-listed selection, Hogan had to spend the 2013 season playing for Melbourne's VFL affiliated team, the Casey Scorpions. He was, however, given permission by the AFL to play for Melbourne in the 2013 NAB Cup.[4] He had an excellent debut season with Casey but unfortunately finished the year on a low-note when he suffered a season-ending knee injury in a game against Bendigo on 17 August 2013.[5] Despite this, he went on to win the Gardner Clark Medal for club best and fairest after having kicked 39 goals in 15 games.[6][7]

On 7 March 2014, Hogan was sidelined indefinitely after he sustained a lower back injury in Melbourne's NAB Cup game against Geelong a week earlier.[8] On 2 July 2014, he signed a two-year contract extension with the club, keeping him under contract at Melbourne until the end of the 2017 season.[9] On 17 August 2014, he made his return from injury playing for Casey in the team's second last game of the season.[10]

After being praised by his coaches and teammates for his great preparation and professionalism over the off-season,[11] Hogan made his long-awaited AFL debut on 4 April 2015 in the Demons' 2015 season opening win over the Gold Coast Suns. He finished the game with two goals and seven marks, helping the Demons to their first 100-plus score since Round 14, 2013.[12]
