Jessami is a town in Ukhrul district, Manipur, India. Jessami is a border town in the extreme north of Manipur State and borders with Meluri, a border town of Nagaland State.

Geography

It is located at an elevation of 1218 m above MSL.[1]

History

The first battle with the Japanese in Indian soil was fought in Jessami. On March 27, 1944, first battalion of the Assam Regiment fought a fierce battle with the Japanese 31 Division. The Jessami battle was significant as it led to strengthening of defenses at Kohima, which played a major role in turning the tide of the Second World War in favor of the Allied Forces.

Location

National Highway 150 passes through Jessami.
