Jesús Soto Karass (born October 15, 1982 in Los Mochis, Sinaloa, Mexico) is a Mexican boxer in the Welterweight division. He is the former WBC Continental Americas and the NABF Welterweight Champion.[1] Jesús is the younger brother of boxer José Luis Soto Karass.[2]
Personal life
Jesús has a brother who is also a boxer, José Luis Soto Karass.[3]
Pro career
Soto Karass holds wins over Michel Rosales, Saúl Román, Carson Jones, Vince Phillips, David Estrada, and Andre Berto. He is signed to Bob Arum's Top Rank.[4] His fight with Gabriel Martínez was ruled a No Contest after an unintentional headbutt.[5]
Soto Karass vs. Jones I&II
Jesús lost to Mike Jones on the undercard of Margarito vs. Pacquiao in Dallas on November 13, 2010. This fight was a huge controversy after the fight when the decision was ruled in favor of Mike Jones after a hard fought battle which saw Mike Jones become exhausted after the second round due to an attempt at finishing the fight. A rematch for this fight happened on February 19, 2011, with Karass losing a convincing fight holding his side.[6]
Comeback
After a four fight losing streak capped by a 5th round TKO by Gabriel Rosado Karass came back on May 26, 2012 and won a split decision against Said El Harrak. He followed this up with a 5th round TKO of fellow contender Euri Gonzalez.
Karass vs Maidana
On September 15, 2012, Karass was matched against Marcos Maidana, a former contender at 140 who was looking to mend his career after a shutout loss to Devon Alexander in his welterweight debut. Karass started off the bout strongly, as Maidana's much vaunted power appeared to have minimal effect on the far larger former junior middleweight contender. Despite his initial success, eventually one of Maidana's shots landed true and dropped Karass hard. The referee stopped the bout so as to prevent a visibly hurt Karass from taking more punishment.
Karass vs. Berto
Following his grueling loss to Maidana, Karass achieved a win over former Turkish contender Selcuk Aydin. This would set up his biggest fight to date, a match against Andre Berto, a former WBC welterweight champion who had lost two of his last three bouts. The bout was extremely competitive and close, with both fighters having moments throughout the fight. Berto would eventually drop Karass in round eleven, before in a shocking turn of events, Karass would land a beautiful left hook right on Berto's temple. Berto was unable to recover and the referee called off the match, giving Karass his signature win.
Karass vs. Thurman
High off his win over Berto, Karass faced off against hard hitting Keith Thurman, a rising contender. Thurman completely dominated the fight, mercilessly battering Karass around the ring, including dropping him in the fifth round. By the ninth, following a brutal combination that left a senseless Karass tumbling to the canvas, the referee called off the match.
Karass vs. Alexander
On June 21, 2014, Karass was paired against Devon Alexander, a former junior welterweight and welterweight champion who had just lost his IBF welterweight title to Akron native Shawn Porter. The bout was an entertaining one, with Alexander keeping his distance while Karass made adjustments and picked up the pace as the rounds went on. Karass would ultimately lose by wide decision, scores that many felt were not representative of the fight.
