The Jerusalem College of Technology (JCT) (Hebrew: בית הספר הגבוה לטכנולוגיה בירושלים‎), is an Orthodox Jewish college. JCT's main campuses ('Lev' and 'Neveh' institutes) are situated in the Givat Mordechai neighborhood of Jerusalem. Other branches are located in the Givat Shaul neighborhood ('Machon Tal') of Jerusalem and Ramat Gan('Machon Lustig'). JCT offers bachelor's degrees and master's degrees in several fields of study combined with intensive Jewish studies.

History

The college, founded in 1969 by Professor Ze’ev Lev (William Low), specializes in high-tech engineering, industrial management and life and health sciences. JCT is particularly known for its electro-optics faculty. The institution is fully accredited by the Council for Higher Education in Israel, the main authority overseeing Israel's academic institutions. Over 4,000 students are currently enrolled in JCT, with a faculty of over 500 professors, instructors and researchers. The mission of the college is to educate students "who see the synthesis of Jewish values and a profession as their way of life; to provide manpower for Israel's developing high-tech industry and who will establish industries of their own; to produce industrial leaders strongly committed to Israel, a Jewish way of life, and for the betterment of the Jewish People and the world."[2] JCT's goal to bring higher education to underprivileged communities is most evident in their EFE (Education for Ethiopians) and Haredi Integration programs.

Machon Lev has separate campuses for men and women in order to allow the Orthodox and Haredi communities, who comprise the majority of its student body and require gender-separation due to religious modesty reasons, to study comfortably.

Special Programs

EFE (Education for Ethiopians)

JCT is the first of Israel’s leading institutions of higher education to operate for the integration of Ethiopian immigrants with their EFE (Education for Ethiopians) program. The EFE program consists of a preparatory year program (Mechina)and a full degree program, most of the students studying in the full degree program participated first in the preparatory year program. The EFE (Education for Ethiopians) program has 108 graduates, 99% employed, 138 students currently study at JCT.[5]

Haredi Integration Program

The Haredi Integration Program at JCT encourages Haredi men and women to pursue academic careers and consists, much like the EFE program of a preparatory year program (Mechina)and a full degree program. The Haredi Integration program has graduated thousands. There are currently over 1,700 ([Haredi men]) and women studying towards degrees at the Jerusalem College of Technology.

International Programs

Machon Lev provides a year in IsraelShana BaAretz program for English speaking students who want to combine their year with a college experience. The classes are taught in English by English speaking professors, as the students have the option to take classes in Hebrew with the Israelis as well. Yeshiva at Machon Lev mimics the regular Israeli program except for the addition of an ulpan(Hebrew classes) to help the English speakers acclimate to Israeli Life, as well as a yearly academic schedule similar to Jewish colleges found in America. A variety of first year college courses, such as programming, economics, psychology are available to the Yeshiva at Machon Lev student.

The International Program at Machon Lev seeks to allow Olim (new immigrants to Israel, or those coming to Israel in order to earn a degree, the chance to earn a full degree in English.[6]
