Conception and development

Jenny's Wedding was written and directed by Mary Agnes Donoghue. She also produced the film, along with Gail Levin and MM Productions' Michelle Manning.[2] Manning stated "I am proud to bring writer/director Mary Agnes Donoghue's poignant story to life. Her vision of the family dynamic is unique, inspiring and highly entertaining, and we couldn't have assembled a better cast to bring the complexities of these characters to life, in what will surely make a highly impactful and very commercial film that will strike a chord with audiences everywhere."[2] The rights to the film were put up for sale at the American Film Market from 6 November 2013.[2] The film centers on Jenny, a homosexual woman who decides to marry her partner, which causes big problems amongst her conventional family.[3] Heigl said "The movie is really just about her journey and her journey with her family and revealing this part of herself that she’s kept hidden for so long."[3]

Casting

On October 23, 2013, Variety's Dave McNary reported that Katherine Heigl had been cast as Jenny, while Tom Wilkinson and Linda Emond would play Jenny's parents.[2] Grace Gummer and Alexis Bledel have also been cast in the film.[2][4][5] On November 24, 2013, Issac Profitt from the Cuyahoga Falls News Press reported Houston Rhines had joined the ensemble cast as Jenny's "quick-witted, live-in-the-moment" brother-in-law. Rhines successfully auditioned for the role and was flown out to the set four days later.[6]

Filming

Principal photography on Jenny's Wedding commenced on October 28, 2013 in Greater Cleveland.[7][8] The film was expected to shoot in the metropolitan area for three to four weeks.[7] Filming locations included University Heights City Hall and Cuyahoga County Councilman Julian Rogers's home in Cleveland Heights.[9] Rogers and his family moved out on October 23 and the studio paid for a rental in Shaker Heights.[10] Representatives from the studio had noticed the house and asked Rogers "out of the blue" if they could use it for filming. The family returned home in November.[10] On November 15, Heigl was seen shooting some scenes for the film on Euclid Avenue in Downtown Cleveland. Some filming was done at the Trinity Cathedral.[11] Production wrapped in Cleveland during the same month.[5]

Post-production

On February 12, 2014, it was announced that an Indiegogo campaign had been set up to help raise money for post-production costs. Donoghue and her crew needed $150,000 to cover the costs of music, titles, color and sound.[12] Lucas Shaw from The Wrap thought that some of the money raised would go towards taking the film to festivals, as it had yet to secure a domestic distributor.[12] The campaign ended on April 12.[13]
