"Jennifer Juniper" is a song and single by British singer/songwriter Donovan,[1] released in 1968. It charted in the UK at #5 and the USA at #26.
Song
The track was written about Jenny Boyd, sister of Pattie Boyd, while they were all with The Beatles in Rishikesh. She married Mick Fleetwood and was, at one time, the sister-in-law of George Harrison and, later, Eric Clapton. The song features a wind section with oboe, flute, and bassoon. The last stanza of the song is sung in French.
B-side
The B-side "Poor Cow" is a song produced for the film Poor Cow by Ken Loach. The original title of the song was "Poor Love". The title was changed when the song appeared in the film. It retained that title when released as the B-side to "Jennifer Juniper" in February 1968. "Poor Cow" is introduced by Donovan as "Poor Love" on his live album Donovan in Concert (1968). Donovan also performed on a novelty cover of the single released in Britain in 1990, by comedy duo Trevor and Simon, as The Singing Corner.[2]
Popular culture
This song is referenced in the film 2007 Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium, when Natalie Portman's character plays it on the piano.[3]
It was also featured prominently in the 1999 film Election when the character Tammy, Paul's lesbian sister, finds her true love Jennifer, and in Season 22 Episode 11 of The Simpsons, "Flaming Moe", in which Principal Skinner falls in love with the new music-teacher, Ms. Juniper.
Theodore Bikel sang this song on one of his later albums as Theo Bikel.
This song is performed by the band Watoo Watoo and appears on the compilation A Gift From A Garden To A Flower: A Tribute To Donovan (2002), and also on their CDep Le tourbillon ep (2012).
