Jefferson County Schools (Alabama)
Coordinates: 33°29′15.42″N 86°47′38.59″W / 33.4876167°N 86.7940528°W The Jefferson County School System is the second-largest public school system in the U.S. State of Alabama and serves most of Jefferson County, Alabama. Significant exceptions:
- Bessemer, which is served by Bessemer Public Schools
- Birmingham, which is served by Birmingham City Schools
- Homewood, which is served by Homewood Public Schools
- Hoover, which is served by the Hoover City Schools
- Mountain Brook, which is served by Mountain Brook School System
- Trussville, whose schools separated in 2005 to form Trussville City Schools
- Vestavia Hills, which is served by Vestavia Hills School System
- Gardendale, which is in the process of separating its schools to form the Gardendale City School System (separation expected to be completed at beginning of 2015-16 school year)
Leadership
The system is presided over by the Jefferson County Board of Education, which consists of five members. J. Dean Taylor is the board president, assuming the post in November 2014.[1]
Day-to-day operations are run by a superintendent. That post is currently held by Dr. Craig Pouncey,[2] who took over in June 2014, following the ouster of Dr. Stephen Nowlin after 16 months in office.[3]
