Jed Fernley Wallace (born 26 March 1994) is an English professional footballer who plays for Portsmouth as an attacking midfielder.

Career

Youth and non-League football

Born in Reading, Berkshire,[3] Wallace was educated at Frogmore Community College. He began his career playing for youth club Darby Green FC (now known as Potley & Darby Green FC) and Carshalton Athletic's youth team, before signing with Farnborough. At Farnborough, he appeared on the bench on 29 January 2011, in a match against Havant & Waterlooville. However, he did not enter the field.[4] In August 2011, he signed for Lewes, following his manager at Farnborough, Steve King.[5] Wallace played in three friendly matches for Lewes, before then signed a two-year professional contract (with an option to further 12 months) with Portsmouth.[6][7]

Portsmouth youth and Conference loans

He progressed through reserve and academy, being a regular starter with the Academy.

On 20 March 2012, Wallace returned to Farnborough, on a one-month loan deal.[8][9] He made his debut on the following day, acting as a starter against Dover Athletic.[10] The match against Dover was Wallace's first ever senior match. He made 6 appearances for Farnborough in his short spell back at the club.

Wallace then returned to Portsmouth, and appeared on the bench against Nottingham Forest, on 28 April 2012.[11] On 14 August, he made his Portsmouth debut, starting in a League Cup 3–0 defeat against Plymouth Argyle.[12]

On 5 October, Wallace joined Isthmian League side Whitehawk on a one-month loan in a bid to play first team football.[13] On the following day, he scored on his debut, in a 3–1 win over Wingate & Finchley.[14] On 18 October, he scored a hat-trick in a 5–0 home win against Merstham.[15] His loan ended in mid-November but was then renewed for another two weeks.

Wallace returned to Portsmouth after his loan expired, but returned to Whitehawk on 23 November, on a one-month loan deal.[16] On 20 December, his loan was extended until 7 January 2013. He was recalled from his loan on 24 December.

Portsmouth

2012–13 season

Five days after being recalled from his Whitehawk loan, Wallace was allowed to start on the bench against Yeovil Town.[17] He made his league debut on 1 January 2013 coming on as a 71st minute substitute, away at Swindon Town.[18]

On 26 January, he was handed his first start, and scored Portsmouth's only goal in a 1–3 home defeat against Hartlepool United.[19] His second goal came on 2 February, after just 5 minutes on the pitch in a 2–3 defeat to Colchester United at Fratton Park.[20] His third goal came on 23 March, at The Keepmoat Stadium; Wallace equalised after 71 minutes against league leaders Doncaster Rovers to salvage a point for Pompey. He then went on to score against Coventry City the following week in a 2–0 win, and also against Preston the following game.

On 20 April, he scored his sixth goal against Sheffield United, and was named in Team of the Week.[21] Six days later, Portsmouth exercised the one-year contract extension in Wallace's deal.[22]

2013–14 season

Wallace struggled to find his old form in the start of the new season; although he did score the first in a 3–0 home win over Morecambe on 17 August 2013.[23] His second goal only came on 28 September, in a 2–4 loss at York City.

Wallace scored twice in October, but after the arrival of Richie Barker, he was dropped to the bench in some matches. Wallace later turned off two offers of a new contract from Portsmouth, and in November his teammate David Connolly revealed that clubs were submitting bids for him.[24]

In January of the following year, Wallace turned down another offer from Pompey,[25] which rejected bids from Peterborough United and dimissed links from Wolverhampton.[26]

Wallace only returned to the scoring ways in March, netting against Fleetwood Town and Newport County; after Barker's departure, he was again starter and scoring his seventh (and last) goal of the season on 12 April, in a 4–1 routing at Dagenham & Redbridge. In May, talks over a contract extension restarted again, with Wallace being tabled as one of the Portsmouth's top earners.[27]

On 6 June 2014, Wallace signed a new three-year deal with Pompey.[28]

International career

On 13 March 2013, Wallace was named on the standby list for the England U19 game vs Turkey, on 21 March 2013.[29] He was called up again on 2 May, for the 2013 UEFA U19 Championship qualification rounds, against Belgium and Scotland.[30]

On 24 May, Wallace was an unused substitute in a match against Georgia U19's. Five days later, he made international debut, starting in a 3–0 victory against Scotland U19's.[31]
