Jayateerth Mevundi (Kannada: ಜಯತೀರ್ಥ ಮೇವುಂಡಿ), born in 1972 May 11, is a Hindustani classical vocalist of the Kirana Gharana. He is widely recognized as one of the leading performers in this gharana.[1]


Early life

Jayateerth Mevundi hails from Hubli in North Karnataka. In his early age his mother introduced him to the intricacies of music and developed his talent. His musical talent was developed under the tutelage of his guru Pt. Arjunsa Nakod and chiseled by Pt. Shripati Paadegar, who himself was a disciple of the legend Bharat Ratna Pt.Bhimsen Joshi.

Career

His music is marked by impeccable taankari (fast singing of complex patterns of notes). Considered to be one of the leading performers of the Kirana Gharaana by connossieurs of music, Shri Jayateerth Mevundi hails from the musical twin-cities of Hubli-Dharwad in Karnataka. An accomplished singer with a deep and melodious voice, Jayateerth Mevundi is rated 'A', the highest grade, by All India Radio and Doordarshan. One of the most sought after artists of the country, he has set his own standards in the Hindustani Classical, Santavaani and Dassavani genres. His live concerts have kept discerning audiences enthralled.

Shri Jayateerth Mevundi is blessed by three legendary musicians, Bharat Ratna Pt Ravishankar, Bharath Ratna Pt.Bhimsen Joshi and Bharath Ratna Lata Mangeshkar. In 1995, Jayateerth Mevundi was a staff artiste of All India Radio, Goa. A thrilling moment for him was when Pt. Bhimsen Joshi himself called over telephone and offered him a chance to perform in the prestigious Sawai Gandharva Mahostav at Pune. A mesmerizing performance by Shri Jayateerth Mevundi in that festival is a remarkable memory and endeavour for music lovers who witnessed his concert in that Mahostav. The popular music director A.R Rehman recently appreciated Shri Jayateerth Mevundi's singing in an exclusive interview conducted by People's Magazine. When asked by journalists "Have you ever been awestruck while meeting another famous personality? Rehman replied " Among musicians, there is Hindustani Classical singer Jayateerth Mevundi from Hubli who sings like electricity. He can put anyone to shame. He is that great. Recently legendary singer Bharath Ratna Lata Mangeshkar herself called Shri Jayateerth Mevundi appreciating his talented singing and invited him to sing for a CD to be produced by her recording company. Shri Jayateerth Mevundi admits this to one of the most unforgettable moments of his life. "Indian music is safe as long as singers like Jayateerth exist", said legendary musicians like Pt. Bhimsen Joshi, Ustad Zakir Hussian and Ustad Amjad Ali Khan.

Performances

Shri Jayateerth Mevundi has participated in several music conferences including the ones at Mysore Dasara Festival, Sawai Gandharwa Music Festival Pune, as well as Alladia Khan music conference, Kumar Ghandarwa Music Conference, Hari Vallabha Conference at Jalandhar, Tansen Samaroh at Gwalior, Gunidas Sangeet Sammelan at Delhi, Dover Lane Festival Kolkatta, Learnquest Festival Boston, Global Rhythms with 300 grammy artists all over the world including grammy awardee artists presented by A.R Rehaman in Miami city U.S.A. Also he received many accolakudes at the 20th Master Deenanath Mangeshkar Smurti, Samrat Sangeet Sammelan ,Goa. He's travelled to many countries like Boston, Singapore, Dubai, Doha, Europe, kuwait, U.S.A many cities couple of times.

Awards

Jayateerth Mevundi was also awarded the "Young Maestro" award which was personally handed to him by President Abdul Kalam at the second year inauguration of the Indian Music Academy organized by Pt. Jasraj on 9 April 2007 in Delhi
