JAY-P or JAY P (born Paul Omiria Epeju on January 3, 1987, in Kampala, Uganda) is a rapper, record producer and entrepreneur. The name originates from his teen age around the early and mid-2000s, when he was referred to as YAPPY J by some of his friends. Alteration of the name to JAY-P was partly based on a childhood nickname, John Paul, which he disliked pushing him to change it to Jay-P or Jay P as some people call him. Jay P credits past music for paving way for his sort of music mostly music from the 60's to the 90's .[1][2]

History

Awards and achievements

MTV has embraced his works, according him ample airplay for videos such as "Can I Kick It". BET music matters has taken on his works, noting his contribution to hip-hop and music as a music matters artist.[3] Two of Jay-P's albums; The Unreleased Cut and Credibly Evident have been reviewed by music reviewer, Music Lifer a hip hop and music reviewer in general.

Abandoning a life of crime and unlawfulness is a milestone in Jay-P's life, a trend he views as a landmark[4]

Jay-P, a Ugandan-African musical act acknowledges distributing digital music through online channels such as ITunes, Amazon and others having noted that the traditional method of selling CD's are increasingly becoming less popular as a result of the convenience buying music online offers. Jay-P leverages the power of the internet like many other music acts today.[5] Jay-P is committed to supporting the growth of small businesses by availing low cost web solutions to enable such entitles build a strong online presence.[6]

Jay-P featured on the top 40 in the hip-hop charts in the month of April 2013 for ourstage.com a music site that rates music according to genre and popularity[7]

Radio

Jay P music gets ample air play on Ugandan radio stations such as '95 N 9 Touch Fm','88.2 Sanyu Fm', Uganda's National broadcaster Uganda Broadcasting Corporation and also on Ugandan radio stations like Xfm, Radio City,Hot 100 and others. Jay-P is a featured artist on New York's leading Hip-Hop radio station, 'Hot 97' WQHT.[8]

Tours and appearances

Jay used to perform in church during 'Youth Extravaganzas' between 2001 and 2003 for the youth in his neighborhood.[9] Jay show cased his EP "Epopee" at the 'Kyambogo University Annual Cultural week 2010' to an audience of over 6,000 university students. Jay has made appearances at Uganda's National Theater showcasing to the native and foreign outgoing elites.

As a rapper who loves the game, preserving the hip hop culture is important to Jay-P in the constantly evolving industry with hip-hop having reached over thirty years of existence since Afrika bambatta influenced its development. Doing mainstream hip hop is something many African rappers seem wary about and are encouraged to aim as high or beyond the success of the well established rappers on the global scene. Protecting The Hip-Hop culture is important as the breed of mainstream rappers has been portrayed as dying in numerous publications.Jay-P strives to continue making good music that reaches out to the world.[10] Jay P showcased his skills during the Save Power, Save Money campaign by Ugandan energy company Umeme to an audience of over 8,000 in Mbale and other parts of the country, as part of the 'Save Power & Save Money' campaign executed by the Pentagon Communications Group an organization tasked with the project

In September 2011, Jay-P released his LP The Unreleased Cut, which received over 100,000 downloads within the first weeks of release. He was nominated for an Interactive Music Award for The Unreleased Cut in 2012 and for the Young Achievers Awards Uganda 2013 in the category of 'Performing Arts'

Jay-P's song "Anti Social" has been featured on CNN iReport highlighting Social issues which Impact Society such as unemployment[11] Having abandoned the life of crime he led to pursue his musical dream,Jay-P encourages others to come clean before. Accomplishing dreams is possible without necessarily engaging in crime or contraband.[12][13] Jay P has reached the top of the reverbnation charts for Kampala, reached number 2 on the reverbnation charts for Tokyo, Japan, and the top 100 in the New York charts in the category of Hip-Hop.[14]
