Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College (JN Medical College or JNMC) is a medical college located in Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh, India. It is affiliated with the Faculty of Medicine of Aligarh Muslim University.

History

JN Medical College came into existence through the enthusiasm of Dr. Sir Ziauddin Ahmed, who saw the need for a medical college for the poor community at Aligarh. He worked with his colleagues and students (old boys) to work for the establishment of a medical college at the Aligarh Muslim University.[1] He raised the funds for the college.However the dream couldn't fulfil during his lifetime because of the death of Sir Ziauddin Ahmed in London.

The college under the leadership of Prof. Hadi Hasan,[2][3][4] who was a leading force in the fund raising campaign. Neatrly eight million rupees were collected from all corners of the nation. The medical college was declared open on 2 October 1962 (the 93rd birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi) with an intake of 1st Batch of 40 MBBS students and the same strength continued up to 1984. The intake was increased from 40 to 100 students in 1985 and this remained so up to 1995. The academic session of 1996–97 witnessed a further increase in the intake of MBBS students up to 150 as well as beginning of BDS course with intake of 40 students in the first batch by the permission of MCI and DCI respectively.

Colonel S. Bashir Hasan Zaidi (vice chancellor), Major SMH Naqvi (Principal) and Mr MM Siddiqui (Registrar) must be given particular credit for overcoming all difficulties in starting the college.

Golden era

In the early seventies the college was under the Deanship and Principalship of Colonel M. Tajuddin. Dr. Mehmoodur Rehman, the then vice chancellor of Aligarh Muslim University played a key role in the establishment of Dr. Sir Ziauddin Dental College under the Faculty of Medicine.

Department of Studies

Department of Anatomy

The department came into existence on 2 October 1962. Department equipment includess cadaver injector, electric saw (bone and meat cutting machine), light microscopes, microtome's, overhead and slide projectors, incubator and ovens, computers, laptop and LCD projector. The department has a museum with dissected parts, specimens, human body models, and charts.

Department laboratories include Histology research labs, Neuroanatomy lab, Embryology cum Teratology lab, museum preparation laboratory and a dissection hall. The dissection hall, with seating capacity of 150 students, is important part for 1st professional MBBS/BDS students of Anatomy. To store the cadavers, the department has a cold storage plant with storage space capacity of 24 bodies at a time.

Prof. Mehdi Hasan of this department is a fellow member of academic bodies such as Indian National Science Academy.

Department of Physiology

The department was established in 1962. Physiology Department is shifted to present building in June 1971 from the old building of the Department of Physics of the Aligarh Muslim University.

There are three paramedical laboratories – Human, Haematology and Mammalian/Amphibian. The Department has produced one PhD and 30 MDs since 1973. Prof. Usha Singhal, former Head of the Department and Dean Faculty of Medicine, was the first MD (in 1973) and the only PhD (in 1986).


The department is a pioneer in the field of teaching Physiology through "problem based learning methodology" and has organised Indo-US Workshops, on problem based learning in collaboration with Southern Illinois University School of Medicine, Springfield, Illinois, USA in 1997 and 2002.

The 35th Annual Conference of Association of Physiologists and Pharmacologists of India was held under the courtesy of this department in December 1989. The department has organised a Practical Training Programme in Laboratory Techniques for non-teaching staff for three months in 2002. A Teachers Reorientation Programme in Munafeul Aza sponsored by the Department of AYUSH, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India was held in March and April 2008.

Department of Biochemistry

The department was established in 1962 as one of the pre-clinical departments in the Faculty of Medicine. The faculty of the department have been pursuing clinically oriented research since inception and till date, 90 PhD, 75 M.Phil. and 25 M.D. degrees have been awarded. The faculty members have run about 50 research projects funded by agencies like UGC, Indian Council of Medical Research, Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, DAE, and DBT.

Department of Pharmacology

The Department of Pharmacology since its inception from 1964 has been engaged in teaching and research. The main thrust areas are Clinical pharmacology, Pharmacoepidemiology, Trace elements in Health and Disease, Chemotherapy, Experimental Evaluation of Known and Unknown drugs, Neuropsychopharmacology and Immunopharmacology (Immune system).

The department organises extension lectures of visiting faculty members from India and abroad (e.g. Dr. Gyurgy Blasko, a Hungarian scholar, visited on 19–20 February 1990). The department has awarded more than four dozen MD degrees (Doctor of Medicine), two D.Sc. Degrees (Doctor of Science) and many M.Phils (Master of Philosophy) and PhDs (Doctor of Philosophy) (including Chemistry) under Interdisciplinary Research Programs.

Prof. PN Saxena, (founder of the Department) and Prof. KP Gupta were awarded the Commonwealth Scholarship and the Wellcome Trust Fellowship to work at the National Institute for Medical Research, Mill Hill, England. Prof. Om Chandra received the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation Fellowship to work in Germany, Prof. KC Singhal has been the Distinguished Visiting Professor at the University of Tennessee, Dr. Syed Ziaur Rahman completed his PhD from UWS School of Medicine, University of Western Sydney, Australia, Dr. Shafiq-ur-Rehman, Awarded the Alexander-von-Humboldt Fellowship and performed research at the University of Munich, Germany.

Department of Forensic Medicine

The department was established in 1964. The main thrust areas are experimental neurotoxicology, clinical and forensic toxicology including insecticide and metal poisoning, DNA sequencing, forensic immunology, forensic osteology, forensic traumatalogy, and legal and ethical issues pertaining to the subject. The results of research are published in International and National journals. The department offers help in dealing with medico-legal cases admitted in casualty. It runs Histopathology, Chemical and DNA labs and a Poison Information Centre.

Department of Pathology

The department was established in 1964 by physician Prof. Sami Hameed. Under the headship of Professors SP Tyagi, KN Ahmed, Ansar A Khan, Firoza Hameed, labs like Histopathology, Haematology, Cytopathology, Chemical Pathology, Clinical Pathology and Blood Banking Pathology labs, came into existence.

Group teaching of students is carried out on a CCTV Microscope and a Pentahead microscope.

Department of Microbiology

The department was established in 1964. In the beginning, the department consisted of Bacteriology Parasitological, Serology and Tuberculosis Laboratories. Subsequently the Virology and Mycology Laboratories were established in 1976 followed by Enteric Laboratory. Apart from the research work, the focus of the department remains patient care and diagnostics; to provide diagnostic facilities especially to the deprived sections of society, and to keep a vigilant eye on the antimicrobial susceptibility patterns of the bacterial and fungal pathogens. Approximately 40,000 investigations are carried out every year. The Revolving Fund has enabled newer investigations in laboratories such as ELISA and PCR.

56 students have been awarded MD Microbiology degrees. The Department of Microbiology now comprises laboratories for specialties like Bacteriology, Virology, HIV/AIDS Lab. Enteric, Anaerobic, Immunology, Parasitology, Tuberculosis, Mycology and Molecular Biology.

The AIDS Surveillance Centre, known as VCCTC, was started in 1993 under the auspices of NACO. The thrust areas of research are antimicrobial resistance, phenotypic and genetopic traits of fungi and drug sensitivity, molecular and biochemical studies on malaria. Studies have also been done on Helicobacter, Cryptosporidium, Mycoplasma, Bacterial virulence factors, bacterial and viral diarrhoea, hepatitis, and HIV.

Department of Dermatology

The department was established in 1992 after bifurcation of Department of Medicine. Teachers are involved in the central modified leprosy Eradication programme year 2001 of the Aligarh district. Special clinics in Pigmentary, Psoriasis, Leprosy, STD and AIDS and Psych-sexual disorders have been started. Dermato-surgery in cryotherapy tattooing laser surgery, epidermal grafting in vitiligo, puva-therapy in vitiligo and Psoriasis has been started and are available to the patients for therapy in the Department.

Department of Paediatrics

The department was established in 1964 with two teachers and four beds in the District Hospital of Aligarh viz. Malkhan Singh Hospital. A 50 bedded children's ward and neonatal nursery was established in 1970 within the campus of AMU, improving the care of sick babies, training and teaching of undergraduate, postgraduate students and research in child health.

A Level II neonatal nursery was commissioned in 1987. The Diarrhoea treatment and Training Unit (DTTU) was established in 1991 with a lump sum grant from WHO. This unit developed into a Paediatric Gastro-Entrology, Hepatology and Nutrition Clinic. Upper G.I endoscopy was started in 1999. Two new paediatric wards were constructed in 1997 and the number of beds increased from 50 to 90. A new 10 bedded neonatal unit was constructed in 2001. A six bedded Paediatric Intensive Care Unit was started in 2005.

Sub-speciality clinics are conducted by the consultants of the Department on fixed days. Adolescents constitute around 23% of the population of India. An "Adolescent Friendly Health Clinic" was started in 2002. Paediatrics Pulmonology and Infectious Disease Clinics were also started in 2002. Paediatrics Nephrology and Paediatrics Hemato Oncology Clinics were started in 2006. Recently a malnutrition treatment unit has become functional from year 2011.

The department can be raised to an Advanced Centre of Paediatrics if funds are provided to upgrade the existing facilities.

Department of Radiodiagnosis

The Department of Radio Diagnosis began in 1967, five years after establishment of the J.N. Medical College and hospital. It started with four X-ray machines of 500 mA and 200mA. Machines available are DR & CR digital X-ray systems, Ultrasound machines, Mammography Unit, Fluoroscopy unit, 16 Slice MDCT Scan and MRI (1.5 Tesla).

Department of Radiotherapy

The department was created on 1 July 1993 consequent to the bifurcation of Department of Radiology. Cobalt Teletherapy machine and Treatment Planning System commissioned in August 1997 (Assistance from Central Government under "Development of Oncology Wing"), Brachytherapy machine was installed in January 2006 (Assistance under X Plan). Other facilities are Theratron 780C Teletherapy unit, Micro selectron HDR Remote After loading unit, X-ray machine for simulation, Computerised Treatment Planning System, Comprehensive Mould Room, Day Care Ward for Chemotherapy administration and Colposcopy facility for early detection of cancers.

Department of General Surgery

The department, established in 1966, imparts knowledge and training to MBBS Students, Diploma in Surgical Endoscopic Technique and students of Diploma O.T. Management. The department provides speciality and super specialist care to the patients. Surgeons like Prof. M. Nasim Ansari, Ramen Goel, Prof. Hari Shankar Lakhtakia, and Dr Chandra Shekhar belonged to this department.

Department of Orthopaedics

The Department of Orthopaedic Surgery became an independent department on 25 November 1981 after being separated from the Department of Surgery. Apart from imparting undergraduate and postgraduate orthopaedic training, the department runs a three-year course of Diploma in Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation under the aegis of the Centre of Professional Courses, AMU, Aligarh. It has facilities for surgical trauma surgery, spinal surgery, joint replacement, paediatric orthopaedics, orthopaedic oncology and arthroscopy. Two major elective OT and one emergency OT work round the clock. A C-Arm Image Intensifier is available in each theatre.

Department of Anaesthesiology

The speciality of Anaesthesiology was accorded the status of a full-fledged Department on 25 November 1981. The department provides super speciality anaesthetic services for Cardiac, Neuro, Paediatric, Plastic and Joint Replacement surgery with the existing facility apart from anaesthetic services to other clinical specialties. It provides Intensive Care and Resuscitative services, Monitored Anaesthetic services in the Radiology and Radiotherapy suits besides carrying out regular Pre-anaesthetic Assessment in the OPD.

The department started a Pain Clinic OPD from May 2006 for the management of patients suffering from acute, chronic and cancer pain.

The department has organised State level Conferences, Workshops, and Seminars in the past. It is the trendsetter in Advanced Airway Management and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation in the region. The expertise of the department in these fields has been acknowledged at National and Regional Academic platforms. It is the only department in Uttar Pradesh who had the privilege to organise the American Heart Association certified Advanced Cardiac Life Support Course in December 2007.

Department of Neurosurgery

Prof. Vinod Kumar Srivastava is the founding chairman of this Department, which separated from the Department of General Surgery in 2013.

Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery

Late Prof. Masood Hasan Khan established the unit of Plastic Surgery in 1977, for which the University Grants Commission gave a teaching post and a grant of Rs.160,000. M.Ch (Plastic Surgery) was started as a two years course in July 1989 with one intake per year. Dr. Arshad Hafeez Khan was the first to be enrolled for the M.Ch. course. Since then, 21 candidates have successfully completed the course from this institution. Plastic Surgery was established as a separate department in 2005.

Plastic Surgery is the only super speciality department in the faculty of medicine conducting an M.C.I. recognised course in M.Ch. Plastic Surgery. The intake is through an all India entrance test with two candidates per year since 2002. The department has four faculty members.

Plastic Surgery runs OPDs, and caters for emergencies round the clock, such as burns, road traffic accidents/assaults, faciomaxillary trauma and hand injuries.

It has 50 beds for indoor admitted patients out of which eight beds are exclusively meant for major burns patients. It has an elective operation theatre running six days a week.

Department of Otorhinolaryngology

The department of Otorhinolaryngology (ENT) was created in 1981. Besides imparting undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, it is also engaged in academic and research activities. The department runs ENT OPD with 30 bedded wards for indoor patients.

ENT surgical operations are also performed in the operation theatre. Three state level conferences of associations of otolaryngologists of India (Uttar Pradesh chapter) and many workshops and symposium have been organised to benefit the upcoming ENT surgeon and postgraduate students. The department holds clinics like vertigo and speech Therapy and Rehabilitation. Prof. Vishwakarma is the founder chairman of this department.

Department of Interdisciplinary Biotechnology Unit

IBU was established in 1985 to function as a semi-autonomous institution and carry out interdisciplinary teaching and research in biotechnology. Since 1990 the MSc Biotechnology programme has been supported by the Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Ministry of Science and Technology. The DBT also supports a Distributed Information Sub-Centre (DISC) attached to the Unit.

IBU receives research funding from agencies including DBT, DST, Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, UGC and AYUSH. Since 2001, the unit has been recognised by the Department of Science and Technology under its FIST programme and the programme is in the second phase. The UGC is funding IBU under the SAP (DRS-I) from 2007.

The unit offers facilities for research in the areas of Molecular Biology, Cellular Immunology/Immunochemistry, Membrane Biology/ Biotechnology, Enzyme Engineering, Structure and Function of Macromolecules and Drug Targeting. Facilities include Central Instrumentation, Bioinformatics Laboratory, Air Conditioned Animal House, Tissue Culture Laboratory, Power Generator, Cold Room, Fermentor and Seminar Library.

Department of Ophthalmology

The Institute of Ophthalmology was established in 1952 to provide postgraduate clinical training and research. Subsequently with the establishment of Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College in Aligarh Muslim University in 1962, it was incorporated as a full-fledged department of Ophthalmology in the Medical College and thus got involved in undergraduate teaching and clinical training in Ophthalmology as well. It has clinics for Retina, Squint, Glaucoma and an Eye Bank.

Department of TB and Respiratory Diseases

The department was separated from the Department of Medicine in 1993. The first batch of MD students passed in 1996. The Medical Council of India recognised the degree in 2005. At present 20 students have successfully completed the course, and are working at Apollo, Max, Fortis Hospitals, some working in the UK and other overseas countries.

The department started DOTS programme in 2004 (Directly Observed Treatment Short Course) in which the government provides free diagnosis and treatment of tuberculosis, since then the department has topped among all the medical colleges of Uttar Pradesh, in achieving the national target of diagnosing 75% of tuberculosis patients and at least treating 85% of these patients. The department started non-invasive ventilation in 2000, and is now planning to start medical thoracoscopy. The department has Labs of Spirometry and Bronchoscopy apart from Non Invasive ventilation, thoracoscopy, bronchoscopy, Bronchoscopy and Spirometry.

Department of Community and Preventive Medicine

The Department of Community Medicine was established in 1962 and implementing all the National Health Programs at its Rural Health Training centre (RHTC) at Jawan and the Urban Health Training Centre (RHTC) at Firdaus Nagar, a jhuggi-jhopri cluster near the railway track in the city of Aligarh. The department gives training to interns, Aganwadi workers and ASHA workers (Asha for Education). It is involved in the National Polio Eradication Programme.

The department runs a Mobile Health Clinic under ROME Scheme, visiting villages in three blocks of Aligarh namely Jawan, Iglas and Harduaganj and providing health care services to the community. Two UNICEF sponsored Health Clinics function at Jeevangarh and Mehfooz Nagar, two underserved areas of Aligarh and providing preventive, promotive, and curative services to under-five children and all females in reproductive age groups.

A Sentinel Surveillance Unit (SSU) for National Programme for control of blindness, sponsored by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has been established in the department. Activities of the SSU are to carry out surveys to find out prevalence of blindness in the community and to take preventive and control methods which mainly include the complete eye check up of the patients, and to organise camps for cataract operation and distribution of glasses free of cost.

Dr. Ziauddin Ahmad Dental College and Hospital

Apart from JN Medical College, under the Faculty of Medicine, Dr. Ziauddin Ahmad Dental College and Hospital is also administered. It has the following departments:

The Drug Society

The Drug Society is a non-profitable, non-political and charitable organisation run solely by the undergraduate medical students of JNMC under the guidance and financial contribution of a team of undergraduate and postgraduate medical students. They arrange medical camps, outdoor clinics, counsel patients on health and hygiene at nearby towns and villages with distribution of medicines and vaccination worth of crores of rupees. The same society also worked distantly for Latur Earthquake, Tsunami at South India (Indian Ocean Tsunami), Bihar floods in 2007, etc.

Upgradation

Government of India decided to upgrade the institute on lines of All India Institute of Medical Sciences as part of phase-2 of Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY) whereby the Central Government will bear 80% of the cost of up gradation and 20% cost will be borne by State Government. The up-gradation work is under progress.[5]
