The Japanese General Election of 1903 (第8回衆議院議員総選挙 Dai-hachikai Shūgiin Giinsōsenkyō) was the Empire of Japan’s eighth general election for members of the House of Representatives of the Diet of Japan, held on March 1, 1903.

History and background

As with the previous elections, the electorate was based on limited suffrage, with only male citizens 25 years of age and over, who had paid 15 Japanese Yen or more in national taxes, and who had been resident in their prefecture for at least a year, qualified to vote. [1] The number of eligible voters who met this requirement was 958,322. The number of candidates for office was 537 with 376 seats up for contest. Voter turnout was 86.17%.
