Japan is scheduled to compete at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from 5 to 21 August 2016.
With Tokyo being the host city of the 2020 Summer Olympics, a Japanese segment will be performed during the closing ceremony.
Sailing

Japan has qualified one boat for each of the following events upon receiving a place from the 2014 ISAF Sailing World Championships.[1]
- Men's sailboard – RS:X (Makoto Tomizawa)
- Men's two-person dinghy – 470 (Tetsuya Matsunaga & Yugo Yoshida)
- Women's two-person dinghy – 470 (Ai Kondo & Miho Yoshioka)
Swimming

Japanese swimmers have so far achieved qualifying standards in the following events (up to a maximum of 2 swimmers in each event at the Olympic Qualifying Time (OQT), and potentially 1 at the Olympic Selection Time (OST)):[2][3] Swimmers must qualify at the 2016 Japan Open Swim Trials (for pool events).
