Janak Palta McGilligan is an Indian social worker and the founding trustee and vice chairperson of Jimmy McGilligan Centre For Sustainable Development, an Indore based non governmental organization working for sustainable community development.[1] She is also a former director of Barli Development Institute for Rural Women.[1][2]
Janak Palta was born in a Punjabi family and grew up in Chandigarh.[3] She secured a master's degree (MA) in English literature, an MPhil in Political Science and a doctoral degree (PhD) in rural training[4] during and after which she worked at various places such as the Provident Fund office, at the High Court and at the Centre for Rural Development.[3] She married Jimmy McGilligan, an Irishman and together they helped found the Barli Development Institute for Rural Women.[3] Janak Palta served as the director of the institution till 2011 when she joined with Krishan Malhotra Charities and is its vice chairperson.[1] She is associated with UNICEF as resource person for the National Institute of Public Cooperation and Child Development (NIPCCID)[4] and has also authored a book on Barli Development Institute for Rural Women.[5]
Janak Palta McGilligan, a recipient of Manav Seva Award, Sadbhavana Samman and Paryavaran Mitra Puraskar,[4] was honoured by the Government of India in 2015 with Padma Shri, the fourth highest Indian civilian award.[6]
