Jamie Brewer is an American actress. She is best known for her roles in the FX horror anthology television series American Horror Story. In its first season, American Horror Story: Murder House, she portrayed Adelaide "Addie" Langdon, only daughter of the main antagonist, Constance Langdon; in the third season, American Horror Story: Coven, she portrayed Nan, an enigmatic and clairvoyant witch, and in American Horror Story: Freak Show, she portrayed Chester Creb's vision of his doll, Marjorie.
Life and career
Brewer grew up loving all forms of the arts, especially movies and theatre productions. She started by taking theatre classes in 1999 at a College for Kids class during her middle school years. She performed in dramas, musicals, comedies, and many improvisations during her theatre training at Dionysus Theatre. Brewer appeared and spoke in PSAs for the Souper Bowl of Caring Houston Food Drive in Houston, Texas for two consecutive years which aired on NBC, ABC, and CBS. Brewer has still not left stage work behind and continues her training through The Groundlings Theatre and School.
In 2011, Brewer made her television debut as Adelaide "Addie" Langdon in American Horror Story: Murder House.[1] She then appeared on Southland in an episode titled "Heat", which aired on February 20, 2013. Also in 2013, she returned to American Horror Story for the third season, subtitled Coven, playing the supporting role of Nan, a young witch who is clairvoyant.
It was announced at the 2014 PaleyFest that Brewer would return to the series for the fourth season, subtitled American Horror Story: Freak Show.[2] Although, at a later date, Murphy indicated Brewer may not appear during the season. Brewer was later confirmed after appearing in a promo for the final two episodes.[3][4] She both voiced and played Marjorie, the ventriloquist dummy / alternate personality of another character.
In 2015 Brewer became the first woman with Down syndrome to walk the red carpet at New York Fashion Week, which she did for designer Carrie Hammer.[5]
Activism
Brewer has been active in the Down Syndrome community. She is the youngest person with this condition to be elected President of the ARC of Fort Bend Chapter. From there, she was appointed to the State of Texas ARC Board, then elected to the Executive Board as Treasurer. Brewer was then asked to serve on the ARC Governmental Affairs Committee for the State of Texas, and while on the committee, spoke with Senators at the Texas State Capitol to persuade them to pass the law for Texas to abolish the word "retarded" from state legislation and to improve recognition of the needs of people with disabilities within the state. The effort was successful and Texas now uses the term "Intellectual Developmental Disability" in their legislation.
Brewer is involved with several other non-profit organizations, including DSALA, DSiAM, BTAP, National Down Syndrome Congress, American Association of People with Disabilities of the United States, and Civitan International.
