James Thornton (born 31 October 1975) is an English actor and voice-over artist. He is best known for portraying farmer John Barton on the long-running British soap opera Emmerdale from 2009 to 2012.
Early life and career
Thornton was born in Bradford, West Yorkshire. He starred in the BBC One police series Holby Blue and as John Barton in the British soap opera Emmerdale. Along with Charlie Baker, he competed in and won the charity comedic dance competition Let's Dance for Comic Relief on 12 March 2011. Thornton announced in November 2011 that he was quitting Emmerdale, and he made his final appearance on 16 February 2012 when his character was killed off in a car crash storyline. From April 2012 James Thornton has been lending his voice to new daytime BBC1 consumer programme "My Worst Deal".
Personal life
Thornton married actress Joanna Page in December 2003. They live in London. Four years before their marriage, they appeared alongside each other in the BBC adaptation of the Charles Dickens novel David Copperfield; he as Ham Peggotty, she as Dora Spenlow.
On 13 February 2010, Thornton was hit by a car during a trip to London. He was treated for shock and injuries to his legs and knees in hospital.[2] Emmerdale show bosses were forced to rewrite a number of scenes involving Thornton's character.[2] Thornton previously lived in a luxury Sandal, Wakefield home rented from Loose Women's Jane McDonald.
On 13 September 2012, Joanna Page announced via her Twitter page that she and Thornton were expecting their first child and on 15 February 2013, Page gave birth to a daughter, Eva Madelief Russell Thornton. On 10 October 2014, he announced that the couple was expecting a second child.
