James Roberts (born 3 March 1993) is an Australian professional rugby league footballer for the Gold Coast Titans of the National Rugby League. He primarily plays fullback, centre and wing.
Playing career
Born in Kempsey, New South Wales, Roberts played his junior football for La Perouse Panthers before being signed by the South Sydney Rabbitohs. He played for the Rabbitohs' NYC team from 2010 to 2012, scoring 28 tries in 26 games.[1]
In Round 7 of the 2011 NRL season Roberts made his NRL debut for the Rabbitohs against the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs.
At the end of 2011, Roberts was named on the wing in the 2011 NYC Team of the Year.
In July 2012, Roberts was released by the Rabbitohs after breaches of his playing contract.[2]
On 10 August 2012, Roberts signed a 2-year contract with the Penrith Panthers starting in 2013.[3] In Round 11 he made his debut for the Panthers against the St. George Illawarra Dragons. He scored a try in the second half of the game, which Penrith won 25-10. He was named once again for the Panthers next match against the Gold Coast Titans. The Panthers punished the Titans 40-18, Roberts scoring a hat-trick of tries in a man of the match display.[4][5]
Roberts also participated in the 2013 Holden Cup Grand Final for the Panthers, against the New Zealand Warriors, contributing with two tries as the Panthers won 42-30. Roberts subsequently won the Jack Gibson Medal, awarded to the Man of the Match of the Holden Cup Grand Final.[6]
After being released by the Penrith Panthers for reportedly smashing a taxi window during the off-season, Roberts was "thrown a lifeline" when he was signed by the Gold Coast Titans for the 2014 NRL season.[7]
Personal life
Roberts is the nephew of former St. George Illawarra Dragons, Penrith Panthers, Sydney Roosters and Wigan Warriors player Amos Roberts.
